Due to Ruby Franke being ordered to serve a prison term ranging from four to 30 years for aggravated child abuse, insights into the events preceding her August 2023 arrest have been provided by her estranged husband, Kevin Franke, and her personal journals.
In private settings, as well as openly on her YouTube channel titled “8 Passengers,” she was observed by numerous viewers.
In the latest Hulu documentary series titled “Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke“, we see the case being thoroughly examined. This series includes the initial on-camera interviews with Kevin and his eldest offspring, specifically Shari Franke and Chad Franke, as they share their perspectives for the first time.
As a person expressing myself openly now, I’ve found it incredibly disheartening to feel muted or gagged – unable to express my thoughts and having others jump to incorrect conclusions about me. However, with this newfound freedom, I can finally seize the opportunity to narrate my story in my own authentic voice.
In an interview following his wife’s arrest, as detailed by prosecutors, he stated that his wife had been drawn into a religious group led by Jodi Hildebrandt, the founder of ConneXions. This group, it seems, had led to Ruby pleading guilty to four counts of aggravated child abuse in December 2023, much like herself.
At that moment, he expressed, during the initial phase of Ruby interacting with Jodi, his sentiment was this seemed utterly unreasonable. He characterized it as a group of women who appeared to harbor deep-seated misandry, merely seeking reasons to criticize their partners.
Initially, Kevin accompanied Ruby for some time to honor her wishes, but later realized it was time for him to progress with his personal life. However, as per his attorney’s statement, Kevin had already left their Utah residence over a year prior to the arrest of both Ruby and Jodi.
At her sentencing hearing on February 20, 2024, Ruby stated that she opted to heed advice and direction which ultimately steered her into a dismal illusion.
She added, “My skewed perception of things often remained undisputed since I avoided interactions with those who questioned me.
To her kids, she said, “There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you in this whole world. I gave up everything tender, secure, and wonderful for you.
Initially, when Ruby and Kevin settled into their residence in Springville, Utah with their six children in 2023, they appeared quite ordinary to their neighbor who preferred to stay anonymous, given that they are well-known YouTubers.
however, by August 2022, the neighbor reported that Kevin was no longer living there, and it appeared that the four youngest children were often left unattended for stretches ranging from several days to multiple weeks.
In other words, the neighbor shared that she reached out to Utah’s Child and Family Services department on more than one occasion. She clarified that she hadn’t witnessed any harm inflicted upon the children, as reported by the Tribune (which verified her interactions with the agency), but expressed concern that they might be receiving inadequate care.
Following Ruby’s August arrest, as reported by the Santa Clara-Ivins Public Safety Department, the four children who were not yet adults were put under the supervision of the Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS).
The unsettling chain of incidents that ultimately led to Ruby and Jodi being incarcerated drew a significant amount of attention from the eager-to-discuss-this-case community on social media platforms. By the moment they admitted their guilt, numerous hours of videos and podcasts had already been dedicated to the duo.
Who is Ruby Franke?
In early 2015, Ruby and Kevin, with their lovable brood of six children, joined the crowd of everyday life home videos on YouTube by launching their channel, 8 Passengers.
They shared that they were part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and presented Shari, Chad, Abby, Julie, Russell, and Eve (currently ranging in age from 10 to 20).
Before the Frankes’ channel was taken down, it had amassed more than 2.3 million subscribers.
As per Kevin’s legal representative, the kids’ father—who has not faced any accusations—was completely taken aback by the claims against his separated wife. Randy Kester, the lawyer, clarified to TODAY.com that this living apart arrangement had been in place for 13 months prior to her arrest, a situation that was not of his own volition.
Kester explained that they preferred to address their issues together as a family. He clarified that there wasn’t any officially documented divorce or legal separation contract between them. Instead, the terms of their separation were decided upon by Ruby and Jodi Hildebrandt.
In the Sidebar podcast by Law & Crime, Kestler stated that Kevin was a responsible father who had never physically or emotionally harmed his children and had no history of child abuse allegations against him.
The attorney stated that he is being harshly criticized despite the fact that he, too, suffered from these psychological and mental manipulations orchestrated by Jodi to some extent, along with his family.
Who is Jodi Hildebrandt?
Jodi is the creator of ConneXions, a platform that provides training, as per her website, based on principles of honesty, responsibility, and humility. This training aims to help individuals strengthen themselves and mend their connections with others. Since November 2022, she has been hosting a podcast with the same name.
In her ConneXions Classroom biography, Jodi characterizes her counseling approach as both empathetic and straightforward.
Ruby’s Instagram account “Moms of Truth,” with over 329,000 followers, initially showcased her family photos. However, starting from June 28, 2022, the page has been focused on sharing ConneXions content, featuring videos of herself and Jodi discussing different aspects of the program together.
In that very month, Ruby switched from the 8 Passengers channel to Jodi’s ConneXions, a channel that has since been removed as well. YouTube, confirming to NBC News, stated they took down both channels in adherence to their guidelines for content creators.
Jodi has consented to a temporary suspension of her mental health counseling license. The Utah Division of Professional Licensing stated on September 19th to NBC affiliate KSLTV that they have been collaborating with her legal team to arrange for the voluntary surrender of her professional license, subject to certain restrictions. This means that if she is released from jail, she will not be able to practice her profession.
The agreement signed by people confirms that the freeze is now official, but it also states explicitly that Jodi denies any wrongdoing in this matter.
Why was Ruby Franke already under scrutiny before her arrest?
In a June 2020 video, Ruby and Kevin admitted facing criticism following an incident where 15-year-old Chad revealed on 8 Passengers that he had been without a bedroom for seven months due to a prank, forcing him to sleep on a beanbag as a form of punishment towards his younger brother.
Upon reclaiming my room, I shared with Insider at the time, “Upon conducting a bedroom unveiling, filled with enthusiasm over the LED lights adorning my space and intricate puzzles I’d assembled and glued to the walls, I hadn’t fathomed that it could eventually become a source of trouble.
A Change.org petition, put forward by a worried advocate, urged officials to intervene, and Utah’s Division of Child and Family Services indeed took action. According to Kevin, who spoke with Insider, social workers spent approximately two hours at their home and conversed with each child individually.
In Kevin’s words, “When they unexpectedly entered, Eve and Ruby were kneading dough for bread and solving a puzzle – hardly suggesting signs of a violent household.” As reported by Insider, a communication from DCFS indicated that the investigation had been concluded without any additional steps since allegations of abuse were found to be unsubstantiated.
In a conversation with the media, Ruby expressed, “My children are incredibly resilient. They’re truly remarkable. Not only have they stood united, but they’ve even offered prayers for those who harbor ill feelings towards us. Those who criticize us, I hope they find the love they yearn for, as they experience it through our children’s actions.
Clips re-emerged after Ruby’s arrest underscore the method of correction that sparked other YouTubers to scrutinize the Frankes, using their platforms for examination.
In one instance, Ruby cautioned her younger son that his rowdy behavior with his older brother could result in losing the right to partake in dinner. A widely-shared video showed her discussing why she chose not to provide lunch for her 6-year-old daughter, despite the teacher being uneasy about her hunger and lack of a packed meal, as it was the daughter’s task to prepare and bring her own food.
In a different quote, Ruby made it clear that her children are not allowed to move in with her once they turn 18. She is very direct on this point.
In a recently uploaded TikTok video featuring eight passengers, Ruby shares that her two youngest children have been exhibiting persistent self-centered behavior. She explains that this year for Christmas, they will be receiving ‘boundaries’ and ‘repentance’ as gifts, rather than the usual visit from Santa.
On September 18, 2022, Shari Franke, the eldest child of Ruby and Kevin, contacted the authorities to initiate a wellness inspection for her younger siblings, as stated in police reports that were acquired by KSLTV.
On that particular day when the police arrived at the residence, neighbors who had gathered outside expressed their worry to the officers about the children being left unattended at home. The officers’ report indicates they were “deeply worried about the children’s well-being and safety.” Later on, the police returned to the house on September 22nd, 23rd, 26th, and October 3rd to collaborate with DCSF (Department of Child Safety and Family) regarding the children’s situation.
Earlier this month, it was made clear that DCFS had a role in the Franke case, but refused to discuss previous visits.
To maintain the trust and confidentiality required in our interactions with those we assist, and to uphold the privacy rights of children and their families, the DCFS has decided to adhere to its policy and not disclose details about any particular case, either old or new.
According to the Salt Lake Tribune’s report dated September 19th, DCFS indicated that each referral they receive undergoes an individual assessment process. They approach each case with unique considerations, taking into account the specific details provided in each instance.
The agency clarified that an investigation doesn’t automatically fall under the category of neglect labeled as “non-supervision.” Instead, they only initiate an inquiry when there’s a detailed report about a particular incident or claim suggesting a child is exposed to unintentional injury, or faces an excessive risk of such an accident.
What led to Ruby Franke’s arrest and charges of child abuse?
On August 30, 2023, in an unexpected turn of events, my 12-year-old son exited a window at Jodi’s residence and dashed towards a nearby neighbor’s house. According to reports from NBC News and the Santa Clara-Ivins Public Safety Department’s press release, he requested food and water there.
At approximately 10:50 in the morning, the SCIPSD’s dispatch received a call concerning a young individual who seemed extremely thin and malnourished, with visible wounds and tape binding his limbs. His state was so critical that he was urgently taken to a nearby hospital.
At the home where the child had been living, authorities discovered his 10-year-old sister in a condition indicative of malnutrition, much like her brother. Just as the boy was taken to the hospital, so too was she, as stated in the affidavit. The SCIPSD reported that items found during a search of the house provided evidence matching the marks discovered on the child.
Afterwards, Ruby and Jodi were taken into custody at Jodi’s residence in Ivins, Utah, where they have remained since then. On September 5th, they both faced six counts each of felony child abuse. Each count could potentially result in a prison sentence ranging from one to fifteen years, as well as a fine of up to $10,000.
According to the Washington County Attorney’s Office, there are two minors who have been affected in these instances. Each defendant is charged with inflicting serious physical harm on these victims in three distinct manners:
1. By inflicting several physical injuries or torturing them.
2. By causing malnutrition or starvation that poses a threat to their lives.
3. By inflicting severe emotional distress upon them.
As reported by KSLTV, during her arrest, Ms. Hildebrandt asked for a lawyer and chose not to talk to them. When she was told about the charges against her, Ms. Hildebrandt stated that her children should never be in contact with any other children.
What have Ruby Franke’s family members had to say about the child abuse charges?
After her mother was arrested, Shari Franke shared on Instagram Story. In another post she stated, “Today has been significant. My family and I are relieved that justice is being administered. We’ve been attempting to inform the police and CPS about this for years, and we’re grateful they’ve finally taken action. The children are safe, but there’s a challenging journey ahead. Kindly keep them in your thoughts and also honor their privacy.
Shari, with approximately half a million followers on her personal YouTube channel, is currently pursuing degrees in political science and statistics at Brigham Young University, as mentioned in her Instagram biography.
On August 31st, Ruby’s sisters Bonnie Hoellein, Julie Deru, and Ellie Mecham, who are all known for their family-themed social media influence, chose to remain silent about Ruby for the wellbeing of her six children.
Offstage, they emphasized their efforts in ensuring the children’s safety: “Ruby and Jodi had to be apprehended for this very reason. Fortunately, their arrests were successful, and our primary concern – the children’s well-being – has been secured.
In a YouTube video dated September 13th, Bonnie stated that Ruby and Kevin severed ties with the family long ago. As such, Bonnie wasn’t aware of any events that were said to have occurred subsequently.
In the video she shared that very day, Julie clarified that she hadn’t been able to reach Ruby at all. She explained further that Ruby didn’t reply to any text messages or emails she sent.
Bonnie went on to express, “The more I discover, the stronger my emotions become anger. I am furious. I am furious about what transpired. I am appalled beyond words and it sends shivers down my spine. It does so because such an event is unprecedented. It is simply incredible.” Additionally, she stated in her video that “it was Kevin’s responsibility to monitor the situation, but he failed to do so.
In response to Bonnie’s claim that a man with six kids hadn’t safeguarded his offspring, Kevin’s legal representative communicated to TODAY.com that their primary focus was on Kevin reaching out to his children, relatives, and acquaintances to mend past wounds and experiences rather than engaging in a dispute with his sister-in-law.
The attorney went on to explain, “Right now, he’s putting his children first, which may involve some self-reflection. But rest assured, this introspection won’t drive a wedge between him and his extended family. He sends warm regards to Bonnie and her loved ones as we embark on this journey towards healing together.
Regarding Ruby and Jodi, they admitted their guilt on four charges of second-degree aggravated child abuse in December. On February 20th, they were given four back-to-back sentences ranging from one to fifteen years.
As reported by NBC News, the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole will decide Ruby’s specific jail term, but she seemed prepared to bear her punishment. During her court hearing, Franke expressed humility and readiness to serve a prison sentence to Judge John Walton, stating, “I am humbled and willing to do my time.” She also acknowledged that this process would likely take some time.
Read on for more chilling details from the Ruby Franke child abuse case:
A press statement was issued by Utah law enforcement after receiving reports of a malnourished child. Upon discovery, the child was described as extremely thin, undernourished, and bearing open wounds and duct-taped limbs. In a critical state, the child was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
The individual was later recognized as the 12-year-old son of YouTuber Ruby Franke, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by NBC News. He had exited through a window at the residence of Ruby’s business partner Jodi Hildebrant and then sought help from a neighbor, as stated in the document.
Subsequently, the police conducted a search at a neighboring residence, revealing another child who was similarly emaciated due to lack of proper nutrition. This child too required hospitalization, as stated in the official statement.
The authorities later clarified that they found Ruby’s nine-year-old daughter scared and alone inside a vacant wardrobe in Jodi’s residence, as detailed in the evidence disclosed by the Washington County Attorney’s Office.
In Utah, Ruby was detained for accusations of severe child abuse, alongside Jodi. Notably, Jodi founded a life coaching service called ConneXions back in 2007, which some former clients claimed to NBC News resembled a cult due to its adherence to principles similar to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
August 31st saw TopMob reporting that Shari Franke, Ruby’s grown daughter, expressed her feelings regarding recent news on her Instagram Story.
Shari, born in 2003, expressed her joy that justice is being carried out. She and her family have been attempting to bring their concerns to the police and Child Protective Services for years, and they are elated that action has finally been taken. The children are now safe, but there’s a long journey still ahead.
Besides Ruby, her siblings Ellie Mecham, Bonnie Hoellein, and Julie Deru also voiced their opinions, stating that the arrest of the YouTuber was indeed necessary.
Over the past 3 years, they chose to remain silent regarding Ruby Franke out of respect for her children’s well-being. Privately, they have made every effort to ensure the kids’ safety. They felt it was inappropriate to continue with regular posts without first acknowledging the recent developments. Once they do so, they will refrain from providing any additional comments on the matter.
The siblings said Ruby’s kids are “now safe, which is the number one priority.”
Previously known as “The 8 Passengers” on YouTube, the woman and her co-business partner, named Jodi, have both been officially indicted for six charges of severe child abuse, according to the Prosecutor in Washington County, Utah.
Ruby’s husband, Kevin Franke, publicly declared his innocence regarding the accusations against him. Randy Kester, their legal representative, informed Good Morning America that the couple had been separated for over a year prior to the arrest, having lived apart for 13 months.
The attorney described him as a kind-hearted individual who exhibits great gentleness, adding that there have been no accusations of physical abuse against him, either towards the children or anyone else.
The report from NBC News states that Kevin has formally initiated divorce proceedings with the Utah-based influencer, as indicated by a court order on domestic relations.
On December 18th, TopMob announced that Ruby admitted guilt for four of the charges against her. As reported by the Associated Press, she expressed remorse for her actions, saying, “I deeply regret and am sorry for my family and my children, I am guilty.
Jodi would also plead guilty to four counts of second-degree felony aggravated child abuse.
The two females received a total of four back-to-back sentences, ranging from one to fifteen years each. In Utah, this combined sentence cannot exceed thirty years as the maximum limit.
The parent vlogger apologized during her sentencing to her six kids and estranged husband.
For the last four years, I’ve been guided by advice that eventually led me down a path of deception and falsehood, she admitted in court. My twisted perspective on life remained mostly undisputed since I avoided interacting with those who questioned me.
She went on to say, “My dears, you are an extension of myself. In my world, what others consider darkness was light, and what they call wrong was right. I’d go to any length for your sake. I stripped you of all that was tender, secure, and virtuous.
The authorities made public her terrifying diary excerpts, where she documented her alleged abuse towards her kids, such as her teenage boy whom she referred to as being under the influence of Satan.
She wrote in a journal entry from July 10, 2023, on her son’s 12th birthday: “He moves quietly and secretly seeking chances when others aren’t looking, then he quickly disappears. If he wishes to imitate the Savior, he must be completely devoted without any deviation or concealment.
She wrote about punishing her children by beating them and withholding food and water.
Investigators’ conversation with Kevin, recorded after Ruby’s arrest, was made public by the prosecution. In this discussion, Kevin discussed the supposed limitations he experienced within their household.
Kevin explained in a recording from TopMob that numerous restrictions had been imposed on him. He could leave whenever he wished, but wasn’t allowed to return unless given permission by Ruby. He also couldn’t enter the kitchen to eat unless granted permission first, and the upstairs where Jodi was living was off-limits. Essentially, Kevin felt like he wasn’t able to access his own home freely anymore. Furthermore, Ruby controlled the conditions of their interactions, deciding when and how they would communicate. This arrangement proved challenging for him.
