In 2024, a Korean Drama (often referred to as a K-Drama) was the second most popular Netflix series in terms of viewing hours, trailing only Bridgerton Season 3. Interestingly, despite the highly anticipated release of Squid Game Season 2, the K-Drama outperformed it significantly. Although Squid Game Season 2 attracted more viewers, it recorded only 619 million hours watched, a noticeable drop compared to the 860.4 million hours watched by the particular K-Drama that year.
The Netflix K-Drama also receives high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, much like this one. Specifically, it boasts a perfect score of 100% from critics, although its audience rating is slightly lower at 71%. For context, Squid Game has scores of 89% and 73%, respectively.
If you’re curious, the TV series you might want to check out is “Queen of Tears,” a romance drama blended with humor, which became popular last year. Notably, it holds the record as the most-watched Korean series on Netflix ever. Moreover, it surpassed “Crash Landing on You” to become the highest-rated tvN series in history. To put it simply, it’s extremely popular and can be streamed on Netflix at this moment.
This series, penned by Park Ji-eun, helmed by directors Jang Young-woo and Kim Hee-won, and starring Kim Soo-hyun, Kim Ji-won, and Park Sung-hoon, consists of sixteen episodes. Each episode runs approximately 80 to 90 minutes, except for the final episode, which is longer, around two hours.
In a popular department store chain, its regal head and her modest small-town spouse navigate through a marital storm—but as if by magic, their love starts blossoming once more.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’d like to share my perspective on watching “Queen of Tears.” If you prefer an English dub, it’s available, but be warned, it’s far from satisfactory. The most authentic and rewarding experience is with English subtitles. For those who aren’t accustomed to reading subtitles, it might take a bit of getting used to at first, but trust me, you’ll adjust quickly. Enjoy the movie!
If you’re new to K-Dramas and intrigued about exploring this expanding genre, “Queen of Tears” is an ideal choice as it’s currently the most popular K-Drama on record. For those who might be interested, “Crash Landing on You,” which premiered in 2019, is another excellent starting point for your K-Drama journey.
