Even the most elaborate Hollywood productions, such as those in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, can’t escape minor imperfections. Despite having countless professionals working diligently to maintain high quality, with hundreds of moving parts in a $250 million production, there’s always room for minor glitches. For instance, while movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania may have noticeable flaws due to their complex special effects, the original four Avengers films generally don’t, thanks to their impressive and convincing visual effects that weren’t compromised by tight deadlines or limited budgets.
Despite rare instances of mistakes, they can be hard to catch because they’re fleeting and quick. However, once spotted, they tend to linger in one’s mind. I apologize for any potential inconvenience this might cause.
The Falling Helicarrier’s Altitude in The Avengers
The S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier is an intricate machine, and the LEGO version attests to this complexity. Numerous components need to work together for it to operate smoothly, such as its altitude sensor. However, in one scene from The Avengers, it’s unclear whether the Helicarrier’s altitude meter was faulty or if Tony Stark’s device malfunctioned instead.
From my perspective as a movie critic, as the flying craft descends, Nick Fury crackles through Tony Stark’s earpiece, “Stark, we’re dropping altitude.” As I watch, it appears Stark is hovering at around 15,000 feet according to his Iron Man visor. However, when Fury checks the helicarrier’s readout a few minutes later, it shows they’ve climbed to 18,000 feet. Either the helicarrier has mysteriously risen or this could be an oversight in the filmmaking.
Duct-Taped Gym Bag Gaffe in The Avengers
Initially, when the audience encounters Steve Rogers in The Avengers, he’s venting some anger on a punching bag (or more than one, as later revealed). Interestingly, the particular punching bag he’s using appears to change subtly without being replaced with a new one.
Initially, he’s observed swinging at the untaped bag from behind, but upon Fury’s arrival, the bag is shown with tape in a close-up shot. Subsequently, the bag appears without tape once more in the following shot.
Tony Stark Heals Quickly in The Avengers
Alongside being considered among Scarlett Johansson’s finest films (and a standout in many of the cast members’ film resumes), the 2012 release of “The Avengers” boasts one of the best third act showdowns in Hollywood cinema history. However, just as with any fast-paced battle involving numerous characters, there are occasional inconsistencies in continuity throughout.
For example, Tony Stark has a scar above his right eyebrow that’s briefly visible, but later vanishes. When he’s pursuing the nuclear threat heading towards New York City, there’s a close-up of his mask revealing an injury. However, upon his return from space, his helmet comes off and the scar is no longer present. It’s not seen again, whether it’s during their capture of Loki or while they enjoy some shawarma.
Hawkeye Picks Up His Daughter Twice (in A Very Short Amount of Time) in Age of Ultron
Prior to Joss Whedon’s dismissal due to his reported set conduct during Justice League, the 2014 film Avengers: Age of Ultron wasn’t quite as enjoyable or engaging as the 2012 original. It does have some good moments, but that’s essentially it. Interestingly, it contains fewer continuity issues and other flaws compared to most movies of its size and complexity.
However, there’s an important detail that surfaces when the group arrives at Clint Barton’s personal stronghold. As Stark and Rogers engage in their argument, Clint’s wife Laura steps in to request a tractor repair from Stark, which seems to be a ruse for her to speak with Nick Fury. In the meantime, Clint can be spotted on the porch tenderly lifting his daughter. A few moments later, as Stark heads towards the barn, you might catch Clint carrying his daughter again in the background.
A Disappearing Hoodie in Infinity War
The initial scene in Avengers: Infinity War featuring Tony Stark and Pepper Potts involves them casually walking through Central Park, talking about their plans for the future. However, their tranquil moment is interrupted by Doctor Strange and Bruce Banner who arrive to inform them of an impending war.
In the Central Park scene, at first, Tony Stark is wearing a hoodie slung over his shoulders, with the ends of the sleeves tied across his chest, revealing his arc reactor. While chatting with Pepper, she loosens the knot and gestures towards the arc reactor. This action is followed by a close-up shot of Tony, who no longer has the hoodie on his shoulders. However, when Strange brings him to Sanctum Sanctorum, mysteriously, Tony appears again with the hoodie back in his outfit.
A Disappearing Electrical Cable in Infinity War
Following the acquisition of the Power Stone and the Space Stone, Thanos dispatches Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian to New York City in an attempt to seize the Time Stone. However, they encounter a problem as the stone is currently with Doctor Strange.
In this sentence, the character Maw attempts to strangle Strange by wrapping a power cable around his neck. However, in the next shot, the cable is not shown tightly constricting Strange’s body, giving him an opportunity to escape using his cape. It appears that Maw did not release the cable intentionally, but rather it was an accidental loosening that allowed Strange to free himself. This seemingly unintentional action helps advance the storyline smoothly.
Peter’s Changing Hair in Infinity War
Following their battle against Cull Obsidian and Ebony Maw, the threesome consisting of Tony Stark, Peter Parker, and Doctor Strange find themselves on Ebony Maw’s spaceship. Although Doctor Strange is still trapped by Maw, his cloak appears to be independent, even engaging in a sort of dialogue with Stark and Parker. During this discussion, there’s an obvious continuity inconsistency if you pay close attention.
As a film enthusiast, I find myself deeply engrossed at this juncture, for this is a pivotal moment indeed. Parker’s transformation into an Avenger, overseen by his mentor, is something that sets my cinematic heart racing. However, it’s the casual yet profound statement made by Peter that truly captures my attention: “You can’t be the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man if there’s no neighborhood.” In contrast to his sleek appearance in all other scenes within the Maw’s craft, this moment sees a more casual, relatable Parker, with his hair not slicked back as usual.
Cap’s Uniform Is Clean in Endgame, but Was Dirty in The Avengers
In the context of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), no film outside of “Captain America: The First Avenger” has as many memorable Steve Rogers / Captain America moments as “Avengers: Endgame”. However, there remains a significant uncertainty surrounding one of these notable scenes – the Captain America vs. Captain America battle scene.
2019 Captain America’s suit ought to be mostly undamaged. On the other hand, 2012 Captain America’s suit should appear worn-out and torn. However, it seems strange that both suits look pristine new given how dirty and damaged 2012 Cap’s uniform was during the midpoint of The Avengers battle. Since 2012 Endgame shows a post-battle Captain America, unless he had an extra suit for changing into after the fight (for shawarma, perhaps), his appearance should be quite disheveled. Nevertheless, a powerful scene is a powerful scene, and this one is certainly impressive.
Cap’s Earbud Changes Locations in Endgame
One memorable instance of Steve Rogers’ character in the MCU, often hailed as the “On your left” callback, presents a slight but discernible inconsistency in reasoning. Following his attempt to single-handedly confront Thanos using Mjölnir, Captain America is visibly defeated and lies on the ground, covered in dirt and exhausted. At this moment, an earbud, which he uses to communicate with his teammates, can be observed clearly in his left ear.
Yet, upon Sam Wilson informing Captain America that he’s returned from the dead, Rogers touches his right ear instead of his left. This arrangement seems more suitable since a portal appears on his left side behind him, and it would be congested if he touched his left ear with an earbud missing on that side. The shots provided show only his right ear, supporting this observation.
Ant-Man is in Two Places at Once in the Final Endgame Battle
As a cinephile, let me share my take on the thrilling scene from “Avengers: Endgame.” During the epic showdown, it felt like Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man, was in two places at once! With Hope Van Dyne, or Wasp, we were huddled in Luis’ battered van, jamming quantum technology to get it going. Yet, when the camera panned out for that intense action montage with Hawkeye tossing the Infinity Gauntlet to Black Panther, there I was – Giant Man – punching a Chitauri Leviathan from behind the swiftly moving Black Panther! Quite a mind-bending moment!
It’s possible that the incident wasn’t a mistake, as Paul Rudd suggested in his own words. After all, we saw in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” that Ant-Man has the ability to replicate himself. So, it might be plausible that this is what happened here.
