Anora’s Historic Oscar Win: Breaking Records and Changing the Game!

It’s a real Cinderella story for Anora.

At the 2025 Oscars held on March 2nd, the film centered around a sex worker getting married to a Russian oligarch was crowned as the Best Picture. This title was given amidst strong competition from other nominees such as “The Brutalist”, “A Complete Unknown”, “Conclave”, “Dune: Part Two”, “Emilia Pérez”, “I’m Still Here”, “The Substance”, “Nickel Boys” and “Wicked”. At the ceremony held in Los Angeles by Conan O’Brien, Alex Coco, Samantha Quan, and Sean Baker (who was responsible for writing, directing, and producing the film) were the ones accepting the award. The movie featured Mikey Madison as its star.

At the 2025 Oscars, the baker matched Walt Disney’s record by winning awards for Best Directing, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and tying with four trophies in one night – a feat that has only been accomplished by two filmmakers throughout the 97-year history of the Academy Awards.

54-year-old Baker made an exceptional achievement, as he was the first and only individual to win four accolades on a single night for the same film. This remarkable feat surpasses Disney’s milestone from over 70 years ago, where they won awards for four distinct movies: The Living Desert, The Alaskan Eskimo, Bear Country, and Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom.

In their acceptance speech for Best Picture, Coco said that the film was made on a budget of around $6 million, with scenes filmed right here in New York City. Approximately 40 people were part of the team working on set. Now, all those hardworking individuals are back home in New York. This one’s for you! A big thank you to everyone involved. We produced this film independently, and if you’re following your dreams by making independent films, keep going! More independent movies like this are exactly what we need. This is our proof that it can be done.

As for Quan, she barely felt like “this can be real life.”

In simpler terms, she expressed her gratitude onstage to our compact yet powerful team and exceptionally skilled actors, under the guidance of the fantastic Mikey Madison. We produced this work with minimal resources, but with immense passion. To all aspiring filmmakers and storytellers out there, I encourage you to share your stories, the ones that stir your emotions. I guarantee you won’t regret it.

Baker also mentioned, ‘One more point: I’d like to express my gratitude to the Academy for acknowledging an authentic independent production. The making of this movie was a labor of love by extraordinary indie artists.’

Apart from being nominated for Best Picture, the film “Anora” also received nominations in six additional categories. Notably, its lead actress, Madison, triumphed and won the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

As evening approached, Emilia Pérez led all films with a total of 13 nominations, trailed closely by The Brutalist and Wicked, each with 10 nominations. However, Emilia Pérez’s journey to the Oscars became clouded by controversy when Best Actress nominee Karla Sofía Gascón faced criticism over past tweets deemed offensive towards Muslims and other groups.

In a statement issued by Netflix, Gascón expressed his understanding of the discussion sparked by his past social media posts that have inflicted harm. As someone who is part of an underrepresented group, he empathizes with the pain experienced, and extends his sincere apologies to those affected. Throughout his life, he has consistently advocated for a more compassionate world, and maintains hope that positivity will overcome negativity.

In light of the recent scandal, director Jacques Audiard (nominated for an Academy Award in Directing), expressed his feelings to Deadline, saying, “Regrettably, this issue is overshadowing everything, and it saddens me deeply. It’s challenging for me to reflect on the work I did with Karla Sofía.

He went on to say, “The bond we cultivated, the remarkable environment we maintained on set, built upon trust, was truly special.” He added, “When you have such a close connection and then encounter words spoken by that person, abhorrent and deserving of contempt, it’s inevitable that relationship will be strained. It feels like a sudden fall into a pit. Because what Karla Sofía said is unforgivable.
