Team Ninja has announced a celebratory statement marking the 21st anniversary of the Ninja Gaiden series. In this announcement, the studio is proclaiming 2025 as the Year of the Ninja, as it plans to unveil three new installments in the franchise: Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, Ninja Gaiden 4, and Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound.
Over the past weekend, the studio reminisced about the special occasion marking back to March 2, 2004, which was the day that the first version of Ninja Gaiden was introduced on Xbox.
2025 has been declared as the “Year of the Ninja” by Team Ninja, and to inaugurate this year, they launched a graphically enhanced version of “Ninja Gaiden 2 Black” in January. Later in the year, we will release “Ninja Gaiden 4”, a new entry in the main series developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios and PlatinumGames. Additionally, we have “Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound” coming from Dotemu and The Game Kitchen. Keep an eye out for updates on these thrilling upcoming titles.
We value the unique traits and fast-paced ninja gameplay of this series, where you battle ruthless adversaries. Our games will preserve these elements, ensuring an exhilarating experience for both longtime enthusiasts and novices eager to try out our series’ iconic ninja combat.
Back in January, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black was secretly released alongside its announcement. This action game, playable on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, is an updated version of the classic Ninja Gaiden 2. In contrast to the original, this remastered edition utilizes Unreal Engine 5. During the announcement, studio head Fumihiko Yasuda mentioned that Ninja Gaiden 2 Black has been designed to cater to both fans who played the original and new players experiencing it as a modern-day action game.
In Ninja Gaiden 2: Black, gamers assume the character of Ryu Hayabusa, along with other figures such as Ayane Momiji and Rachel, in the main storyline. The game also retains elements similar to those found in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. For a comprehensive analysis of this remastered version, be sure to read our review for additional insights.
In addition to the remaster, Team Ninja announced the upcoming release of “Ninja Gaiden 4”. Expected to launch in Fall 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, “Ninja Gaiden 4” is a joint production between Team Ninja and PlatinumGames. The narrative centers around a new character, Yakuma from the Raven Clan, who must confront the turmoil left by the remnants of the Dark Dragon. Ryu Hayabusa will also appear in the story, with Team Ninja suggesting that he will hold a significant position within the game.
Back in January, Xbox head Phil Spencer disclosed that discussions about developing Ninja Gaiden 4 with Team Ninja began approximately six to seven years previously.
This year, the third installment of the franchise is set for release on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. Called “Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound“, this game has been developed by the team known for creating the metroidvania title “Blasphemous“. In “Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound“, players will assume the role of Ryu Hayabusa as they confront demons in America, with the game being a sidescroller.
Happy 21st anniversary!#NINJAGAIDEN
