In a new production by the BBC, titled “Towards Zero,” which is an adaption of Agatha Christie’s 1944 novel, we delve into a series of chilling occurrences at Gull’s Point, a grand coastal mansion belonging to the imposing Lady Tressilian.
Among her attendees are tennis prodigy Neville Strange, who is her relative, his former spouse Audrey and his present wife Kay. Important figures also include lawyer Mr Treves and his charge Sylvia, Lady Tressilian’s aide Mary, Neville’s cousin Thomas Royde, the enigmatic Louis Morel, Nevile’s servant Mac, and Inspector Leach – each concealing their own hidden truths. As with any Agatha Christie novel, there are always secrets to unravel and mysteries to solve.
But the main event, the killings, don’t take place in the first episode, as we’ve come to expect.
According to Treves, it’s more effective for a murder not to happen at the start of the story, but rather later on – specifically near the end of the second episode and the start of the third. This structure provides plenty of time for us to delve into the main characters and understand their roles.
So, how did Lady Tressilian and Treves meet their respective ends?

Towards Zero ending explained
After their tennis game with Nevile, Inspector Leach shares everything openly with the guests at Gull’s Point.
It was Audrey who secretly placed incriminating evidence in her former husband’s vehicle, leading to the revelation of Nevile’s unfaithfulness and ultimately pressuring him to seek a divorce.
And that, announced Leach, was the catalyst for the murders.
In response to Audrey leaving him after they vowed to always stay together, Nevile aimed to exact retribution due to her perceived disrespect.
Initially, he tried to create uncertainty within the group by crying profusely following the death of his aunt, pretending to be guiltless when implicated, and instead accusing Audrey.
He killed Lady Tressilian prematurely to claim her estate legally, since she hadn’t yet had a chance to alter her will.
At the local bar Easterhead, he intentionally created quite a stir as a means of providing himself with an alibi. Given its distance, it’s safe to say that swimming there was not a feasible option; travel by either ferry or car seemed to be the only possibilities.
It was discovered that Leach found an old picture of Nevile participating in a swimming event, leading him to believe that the time and distance involved were achievable for Nevile.
In the course of the tennis game against Leach, it appeared as though Nevile had injured his shoulder, possibly due to a prior swim. To create the illusion that Audrey was the murderer, he concealed her compact inside his jacket, which he had also filled with her makeup and hair accessories.
Due to the mistaken arrest of Matthew Hutton for Lady Tressilian’s murder by the police, he felt compelled to kill Mr Treves to shift suspicion onto Audrey instead.
For decades, Audrey concealed the fate of Peter James to shield Nevile, but she confides in Inspector Leach, potentially linking Nevile to his death. As a result, Nevile’s actions led to Thomas’s falling grace and the decline of his family, ultimately driving a wedge between him and his cherished aunt.
At the conclusion, Audrey, now liberated, proclaims her ability to travel wherever she pleases, whereas Nevile faces execution for the killings.
Throughout the series, Inspector Leach and Sylvia grew quite close. With Sylvia’s caregivers no longer around, Inspector Leach assumes the role of her guardian.
Ultimately, Leach managed to untangle all the complex strands, discovering that Nevile was indeed the perpetrator behind the murders. There were several misleading clues along the way.

Leach successfully sorted out all the intricate knots in the case, finding out that it was Nevile who committed the murders after a series of confusing leads.
