Twenty-five years ago today, on March 4th, 2000 (using Japan’s current date), the iconic PlayStation 2 hit the market. Gosh, we sure feel old!
Over its lifespan, the successor to the highly successful PlayStation, known as the PS2, managed to sell an astounding 160 million units, making it the best-selling video game console in history. The Nintendo Switch is currently the only other console that comes close to matching this record at the time of writing.
Numerous individuals often express the opinion that the PlayStation 2 boasts the most impressive software library in history – a viewpoint I find hard to disagree with, given its stunning array of offerings. The console’s era was marked by an abundance of timeless PS2 games, ranging from cherished RPGs and exceptional action titles, to elite fighting games and visually stunning racers.
As a gamer back in the early 2000s, I’ve got to say that the PlayStation 2 wasn’t just about gaming – it was an all-around sensation. It wasn’t only the games that made it a global phenomenon, but also its underrated ability as a DVD player. In fact, for a significant part of its lifespan, purchasing a PS2 was less expensive than getting a separate DVD device. That combination of entertainment and affordability was the secret sauce to its success in those days.
After debuting in Japan in March 2000, the PS2 eventually arrived in North America in October and Europe in November. Remarkably, this console remained in production for nearly 13 years before its global discontinuation in 2013 – a fact that now appears quite astonishing in retrospect.
Reflecting back on my gaming journey, I can’t help but reminisce about some of my dearest memories with the PlayStation 2 (PS2).
