7 years have passed since the cancellation of Scalebound, and it seems that the game is still a cherished idea for its director, Hideki Kamiya. Originally developed at PlatinumGames, Kamiya now leads Clovers, Inc. This morning, their official X/Twitter account posted a video of Kamiya and his team watching footage of the cancelled game. Kamiya expressed his desire to make it again sometime in the future. Later, Kamiya re-shared the post on his personal account, saying “let’s do it, Phil,” referring to Xbox head honcho Phil Spencer.
Ever since the birth of PlatinumGames back in 2006, the idea for a game like Scalebound has been swirling around in my head. We finally started working on it in 2013, with Xbox Game Studios taking care of publishing. Now, you know us gamers love our action-packed games from PlatinumGames, but Scalebound was going to be something different – an action RPG. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, the game never quite materialized and had to be cancelled. But let me tell you, I’m incredibly proud of what my team managed to achieve during that time.
Microsoft holds the rights for the Scalebound intellectual property, so any future plans or possible reboots for the game must be decided upon by them. It’s uncertain if parts of the current Scalebound build can be preserved, or if they would need to begin anew. If there’s potential for further development on the existing build, it’s not unreasonable to speculate that Xbox Game Studios might revisit the project.
It’s important to point out that compared to 2017, Xbox’s current situation is quite distinct. In the past, their main objective was to rival PlayStation and Nintendo. However, their focus has shifted significantly today, with the company aiming to distribute Xbox-published games across various platforms. This change in strategy has opened up numerous avenues for Microsoft to recover costs. For instance, a game like Scalebound, which would have been an exclusive console title back then, is now being published on Switch and PS5 as well. Given the success of some Xbox games on these other platforms, it could be profitable to reintroduce Scalebound as a multiplatform release.
At this point, it appears that a revival of Scalebound might not happen anytime soon. It’s uncertain if Microsoft (Xbox) would reconsider a game they previously cancelled, and moreover, Hideki Kamiya, the developer, is likely quite occupied at the moment. His company, Clovers, Inc., is currently engaged in creating a sequel to Okami for Capcom, and it seems that development on this game is just getting started. So, fans of Scalebound who were eagerly awaiting its release might want to adjust their expectations for now.
