Disneys official announcement has confirmed the cancellation of their planned Tiana series on Disney+, representing a significant step back in original streaming content production. Initial reports about this move were made by The Hollywood Reporter. This shift in strategy means that Disney will no longer exclusively focus on creating lengthy animated content for its streaming services, which unfortunately results in job losses at the Vancouver animation studio responsible for this series and the upcoming film, Moana 2.
The cancellation of the Tiana series isn’t without its repercussions. A representative from Disney confirmed that their Vancouver animation studio will undergo layoffs as a result of this change in business approach. Alongside the abandonment of the Tiana series, another unannounced feature-length project destined for Disney+ has also been cancelled.
A Costly Exit From Streaming
Back in December 2020, it was initially planned to revive the Tiana series, with Anika Noni Rose set to lend her voice once more for her character from The Princess and the Frog. The concept aimed to create a musical follow-up to Disney’s first animated movie centering around a Black princess. However, despite several changes in the creative direction, sources indicate that the project didn’t end up being worth the investment required for its production.
This recent action indicates that Disney is still adjusting its focus for its streaming services. Over the last few years, they’ve invested billions in original content for Disney+, especially in series based on Star Wars and Marvel, but these initiatives often didn’t yield the anticipated profits. Shows like “The Acolyte” and “Secret Invasion” were costly gambles that consumed hundreds of millions of dollars without striking a chord with viewers, further strengthening the case that Disney’s all-in approach to streaming might not have been successful.
Vancouver Studio Layoffs Raise Questions
The consequences of this choice might stretch further than just one movie franchise. Given that the sequel to Moana, which raked in over $1 billion globally, was primarily developed at the Vancouver studio, Disney could be releasing the very team members who contributed significantly to one of their recent blockbusters. Yet, it’s still uncertain who within the studio is potentially impacted.
Disney has recently been moving back to theatrical releases as its main priority. Originally, Moana 2 was planned as a series for Disney+, but it was later changed into a full-length movie. This change proved successful, and along with Inside Out 2’s remarkable box office performance, it demonstrated that Disney’s strongest suit remains in traditional theatrical animation, keeping away from political agendas (though that’s a topic for another discussion).
The Future of Disney Animation
Contrary to the notion that Disney is leaving behind Tiana’s series, it appears they are not completely abandoning The Princess and the Frog. It seems a short-form animated special derived from the 2009 movie is being developed early on, but specifics are still confidential. On another note, Disney Animation has pledged to release one theatrical film annually. Zootopia 2 is scheduled for November 26 this year, followed by an as-yet-unnamed feature in 2026 and Frozen 3 in 2027.
