Disney+ Cancels Tiana Series: Fans Left Heartbroken Over Princess and The Frog Sequel

It seems that Disney+ has decided not to proceed with the planned sequel series for the character Tiana from The Princess and The Frog, voiced by Anika Noni Rose. Initially, when Disney was creating content for their streaming service, they considered Tiana as a natural fit. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the Tiana series is no longer in development at Disney+. Instead, Walt Disney Animation Studios has put aside this highly anticipated project and has decided to stop producing original longform content for streaming.

According to a trusted source, the cancellation of the animated film “Tiana” has led to job cuts at Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Vancouver branch, as the studio adjusts its overall strategy. Additionally, a previously undisclosed feature-length project destined for Disney+ has also been shelved, meaning two projects intended for the streaming service have been halted. The mystery remains as to whether this abandoned project was based on an existing franchise or a completely new concept.

In 2020 during Disney’s Investor Day, it was announced that a musical spinoff of the movie “The Princess and The Frog,” featuring Tiana, was in the works. However, the original Tiana project has been put on hold due to its high production cost and several behind-the-scenes creative changes. Joyce Sherri (“Midnight Mass”) was recently named as the lead writer and director for this project. Originally planned for a 2024 release, it’s now clear that won’t be happening. Instead, there’s a short-form special in early development, with Sherri still involved, and Steve Anderson joining as a director.

Tiana’s character resembles that of the title character from “The Princess and The Frog” as she embarks on a magnificent new journey as the newly crowned Queen of Maldonia, yet her longing for her New Orleans roots remains strong. Nathan Curtis was slated to produce with Jennifer Lee and Stella Meghie serving as executive producers. In the original plan, Sherri would have taken over as both writer and director, replacing Stella Meghie.

Some other cherished animated films that have spawned series on Disney+ are “Zootopia”, “Big Hero 6”, and “Cars”. Originally, “Moana 2” was designed as an animated series for Disney+, but it was subsequently transformed into a feature film. The sequel to “Moana” has now grossed over $1 billion worldwide and will become available for streaming on Disney+ from Wednesday, March 12th.

The story “The Princess and The Frog” offers a fresh take on an old favorite, centering around a charming girl named Tiana, who aspires to run her own restaurant. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she encounters a frog prince yearning to regain his human form. After their enchanted kiss, they embark on a humorous journey filled with the magical landscapes of Louisiana’s swamps.

Disney Parks has swapped Splash Mountain with Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, as the Princess and The Frog-themed ride made its debut this summer. ComicBook was present at the Orlando resort to get a sneak peek of Disney World’s new Tiana attraction and uncover more about the intriguing tale behind the exciting transformation.
