As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the praise showered upon Lesley Hornby, better known as Twiggy – arguably the UK’s pioneering supermodel, predating the term itself. Discovered in 1966 at the tender age of sixteen, a schoolgirl with a boyfriend ten years her senior, she didn’t fit the traditional mold of a model. She was told she was too short, too thin, and lacked a bust. Yet, her unique style was born when she underwent a revolutionary pixie cut and adopted eye makeup inspired by her cherished rag doll. This slightly androgynous look, an immediate hit, catapulted her to stardom.
The documentary “Twiggy” chronicles this meteoric rise, her retirement at the young age of 22, but that was far from the end of her story.
I’m sharing insights about my perspective on Director Sadie Frost’s latest documentary, which delves into the life of a ’60s icon she previously explored in her Mary Quant docu. At 76, she still maintains an impressive physique that many of us can only envy, having gone through life with a fascinating career journey. She reminisces about her rise to fame, which included a brief but successful singing stint alongside legends like David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, and Bing Crosby, as well as winning two Golden Globes for her performance in Ken Russell’s 1971 film, ‘The Boyfriend’. Since then, she has graced the silver screen in diverse projects such as Heartbeat and The Blues Brothers, often garnering praise. Later in life, she reinvigorated the Marks & Spencer brand with a successful modeling campaign when it was struggling.
In a straightforward and engaging manner, this documentary offers an unvarnished perspective on her life, but it’s the stark portrayal of a potentially biased era that stands out most. Footage from news reels and interviews serves as an enlightening reminder, showcasing everything from frivolous questions about beauty to persistent interrogation about intellectual pursuits. For instance, a journalist asks her about her favorite philosopher, only to have the young woman skillfully flip the script by inquiring about his own preference. The interviewer, who turns out to be Woody Allen, becomes flustered as she presses him for an answer. However, the most startling moment occurs when he addresses the camera, revealing the subtle prejudices and power dynamics of the time.
When she went to New York, Twiggy, the cockney model who was actually raised in Neasden, turned into quite a sensation. Yet, despite the overwhelming crowds of fans eager to catch a glimpse of her, she managed to maintain a down-to-earth, agreeable, and likeable demeanor. This is a reflection of her character, serving as an example for contemporary supermodels on how they should conduct themselves. She never lost that infectious charm, which reminds us all of the importance of staying humble and cheerful.
