The House of Representatives is in mourning.
Representative Sylvester Turner, who was recently elected as a first-term Democrat to serve Texas and took office in November, passed away after experiencing a medical emergency shortly following President Donald Trump’s speech to Congress on March 4th. NBC News reported this information, referencing two fellow House Democrats as their source. He was 70 years old.
From 2016 to 2024, Turner served as mayor of Houston. On a particular evening, around 8:30 PM Eastern Time, he attended the president’s speech and shared a video on X (previously Twitter) half an hour before the address. In this video, he introduced his event guest, Angela Hernandez, who was vocalizing her support for her ailing daughter.
In simpler terms, his message to the current government for tonight’s State of the Union was, “‘Keep your hands off Medicaid.’ To make this clear, any reductions in Medicaid funding is a direct assault on families similar to Angela’s.
In a private gathering, Representative Katherine Clark (D-Mass) announced the demise of her colleague, Turner, to her fellow lawmakers. This information was later confirmed by NBC News, based on a source who was present at the meeting.
In addition, the source mentioned other Democratic officials who either encountered or conversed with Turner (a survivor of bone cancer) during Trump’s speech, while another Democrat asserted they observed an incident that seemed like a medical emergency involving the Texas representative in the tunnel linking the Capitol to the Cannon Building earlier that day.
After the demise of Turner, it falls upon Greg Abbott to initiate a special election, a procedure that might span over several months.
Amid the heartbreaking news, tributes from Turner’s colleagues across both parties poured in.
Leading the Democratic House Caucus, Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) expressed deep sorrow and surprise upon hearing about the unexpected demise of Congressman Sylvester Turner. Despite his recent entry into Congress, Turner had a remarkable history in public service that spanned over many years. He dedicated much of this time to championing the causes of Houston’s residents.
Similar to his predecessors, Representative Turner stood firm until the very end. He attended sessions yesterday evening to guarantee that a voice of one of his constituents, who depends on Medicaid, was acknowledged. In his final address to his cherished constituents last night, he emphasized, “Let it be clear: do not undermine Medicaid.
Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., also expressed his condolences following Turner’s sudden death.
It’s heartbreaking to learn that Congressman Sylvester Turner from Texas’s 18th District has tragically passed away. This is the message shared on X. He was deeply committed to serving his community, not just during his tenure in Congress, but also as a previous state legislator and Mayor of Houston. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and the people he represented as they cope with this sad loss.
