Shocking Retirement: Bengals Star Sam Hubbard Calls It Quits at Just 29!

Sam Hubbard is hanging up his helmet.

As a die-hard Bengals supporter, I can’t hide my emotions as our veteran defensive end, who has been a pillar on our defense for years, declared his decision to hang up his cleats and retire from the NFL. At just 29 years old, he leaves behind seven action-packed seasons filled with passion and grit.

In a post on X (previously Twitter), Hubbard expressed that he had given his all to this game, this team, and this city. Consequently, with a sense of pride, he is now stepping away from his NFL career and embarking on a new phase in his life.

Originally from Ohio, he found great significance in the opportunity to play professionally for his hometown team, a fact he later contemplated deeply.

Growing up in Southwest Ohio, Cincinnati has always been, and will forever be, the city where my family and I feel at home. Before I even donned a Bengals jersey, I was already a fan of orange and black. The path that led me from a high school lacrosse player on 71-North to playing defensive end at Ohio State University, then returning home as the Bengals’ third-round pick in 2018, is something for which I am thankful every day.

The longest-serving Bengals player at the time of his statement looked back on all the achievements he made throughout his professional football career, among them being a remarkable play from 2022 known as “The Fumble in the Jungle.” In this game, he managed to recover a fumble and sprinted 98 yards before scoring a touchdown.

Hubbard mused, “Transforming from a draft choice into a regular starter, a four-time team captain, and someone who contributed some key plays, we achieved feats that will live in history forever.” “We put an end to a 31-year playoff victory drought, claimed the AFC championship twice, won back-to-back AFC North titles, reached the Super Bowl, and created numerous unforgettable memories,” he added.

He stated, “Every morning I resolved to present the fans with something they could take pride in, cheer for, and rally around.

The defensive player expressed a hope that his impact extends beyond merely his achievements on the football field, suggesting he wants his legacy to be more profound.

In this remarkable city, I’ve found a meaning that transcends football for me. Through the Sam Hubbard Foundation, I’ve striven to uplift Cincinnati just as it has lifted me. Your unwavering support and the profound impact we’ve created together have demonstrated to me that the bonds of community and love far surpass any trophy. Being recognized twice for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award stands as my greatest source of pride.

Throughout his career, Hubbard endured numerous injuries, one being a knee injury that occurred during the last play of his career in December. Despite these setbacks, he left a significant mark on the Bengals, as evidenced by the heartfelt remarks made by the team president, Mike Brown.

Ever since Hubbard announced his retirement, I can’t help but express my admiration. He embodies everything you could hope for in a player: he’s an exceptional teammate, gifted athlete, and deeply committed to our community. Witnessing him play throughout his NFL career, representing his hometown team, has been an honor beyond words. Cincinnati is lucky to call him ‘one of its own’, and we are grateful for the unforgettable moments he’s given us.
