Over the past few years, Sonic the Hedgehog has had quite an impressive run. He’s starred in three hit live-action movies and Sega has consistently provided him with a variety of video games. In their latest financial report, Sega discussed upcoming Sonic titles, some of which are being developed for mobile and console platforms. The launch date for Sonic Rumble was recently moved to this spring, and Sega has shared some insights about the reason for the postponement. It seems they’ve been collaborating with Rovio to resolve certain issues.
Regarding “Sonic Rumble”, discussions are ongoing with Rovio about potential enhancements that were identified during testing in various locations. Our goal is to roll out this service worldwide once we have a clear route for making necessary improvements, according to Sega.
2023 saw me, as a dedicated Sega fan, thrilled by the acquisition of Rovio Entertainment in a whopping $772 million deal. At first, this move left many scratching their heads due to Angry Birds’ waning popularity. However, Sega Sammy clarified their intentions during an investor Q&A, revealing they aimed to acquire a game studio specializing in hyper-casual games and boasting strengths that Sega lacked. Now, it appears Rovio’s mobile gaming prowess is propelling Sonic Rumble towards success!
Besides “Sonic Rumble”, Sega also tackled various other launches. Regarding mergers and acquisitions, the company hinted at growing the development teams dedicated to Sonic the Hedgehog, in numerous ways. With several gaming companies reducing their workforce, it seems Sega is aiming to increase the number of developers working on its thriving franchises like Sonic.
….the companies handling the Sonic and Yakuza franchises are currently understaffed, and we’re actively seeking to fill these gaps by recruiting new employees and potentially merging with other companies.
Fans of the Sonic series will likely find this news encouraging. For over three decades, Sonic has been Sega’s official mascot, and they have consistently expressed their ambition to enhance the quality of the video games associated with it. Increasing the team working on Sonic games might not guarantee success but could certainly contribute positively. In recent times, Sega has opted for yearly releases of Sonic games, and a larger staff may aid in sustaining this frequency.
2023’s Sonic Superstars received a mixed response and sales were slow. On the other hand, Sonic x Shadow Generations from last year performed exceptionally well for the company, selling over 2 million copies globally. It remains uncertain how gamers will respond to this year’s Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, but here’s hoping Sega maintains its high-quality standard. Given that the game is already deep into development, it seems unlikely any adjustments can be made through staffing or mergers. However, these moves could potentially positively impact Sega’s 2026 release.
