The follow-up to “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” titled as of yet, has brought on actor Matthew Modine and provided an update on production. As per Deadline’s report, filming is set to start next month. Joining previously announced actors Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo, along with returning star Dan Stevens, Modine will be part of the cast. Notably absent are any announcements about other original cast members reprising their roles. The new movie features both a new writer and director, continuing the “Monsterverse” continuity established in Legendary’s Godzilla and Kong films for over a decade.
In Hollywood, Modine is a long-standing figure and a valuable inclusion in the film “Godzilla x Kong.” Although we don’t know what character he will portray at this time, his versatile acting skills have certainly made him a desirable choice for the production team. Unlike some actors who are often limited by typecasting, Modine has consistently demonstrated his ability to take on diverse roles, such as Dr. Martin Brenner in “Stranger Things” and Vannevar Bush in “Oppenheimer.” Given his previous experience in scientific roles, his expertise could prove beneficial in this film, considering the significant expansion of Monarch’s research facilities in recent Monsterverse movies.
Initially, director Adam Wingard was enthusiastic about producing a follow-up to “The New Empire” upon its release. But as planning for the shoot approached, scheduling issues prevented him from being involved in the project. Fortunately, Legendary Entertainment managed to enlist David Callaham, a veteran of their Monsterverse series who had penned the 2014 “Godzilla” film, to write the new script instead. The upcoming movie will be helmed by Grant Sputore, most recognized for his work on the Netflix original production “I Am Mother.
To date, not much information has been revealed about the upcoming story, but during interviews for the release of The New Empire, Wingard hinted at some general concepts. He proposed that the sequel could focus more intently on Godzilla’s perspective, much like how The New Empire primarily followed Kong’s viewpoint. He expressed his desire to explore a “new direction” for this film, differentiating it from the previous installments as the series progresses.
The person controlling the Monsterverse cinematic universe needs to adapt to keep pace with changes in its genre’s trends. Recently, The New Empire and the Japanese film Godzilla Minus One sparked debates among audiences. Interestingly, Minus One was released before The New Empire, presenting a more somber atmosphere compared to its counterpart. We’ll be eagerly waiting to see if the sequel attempts to follow suit or forges its unique path instead.
At present, you can stream “Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire” on both Netflix and Max. The upcoming sequel is set to be released on March 36th, 2027.
