For several years now, there’s been a significant change in our work methods as artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly come to the forefront. Last year, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang suggested that traditional software engineering may no longer exist due to the increasing influence of AI.
Instead of focusing solely on coding as a potentially profitable career, Huang advises young people to delve into various other areas such as biology, education, manufacturing, or agriculture for a broader career perspective.
Mike Krieger, Instagram‘s co-founder, shares similar views. In a recent podcast interview, he mentioned that the job description for software engineers is quickly changing. Soon, these professionals might find themselves verifying code generated by artificial intelligence instead of writing it themselves, as reported by Business Insider.
It’s worth noting that Krieger’s viewpoint doesn’t unequivocally suggest that AI will entirely replace coding jobs. Instead, AI is likely to be assigned routine and less complex tasks, allowing software engineers to focus on more nuanced responsibilities where AI may lack proficiency.
In three years, I believe the nature of our work will likely involve generating the right concepts, designing effective user interfaces, managing tasks effectively, and reviewing large amounts of work efficiently. This might require a mix of traditional static analysis methods or AI-driven tools to evaluate the final outputs.
According to Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman, the swift rise and widespread use of artificial intelligence might lead software developers to no longer need to code, instead requiring them to acquire new abilities in this area to remain competitive.

Tech brands are pondering software roles
Companies such as Salesforce and Meta have been known to unveil intriguing approaches to software development. For example, the CEO of Salesforce, Marc Benioff, hinted at a potential plan to recruit software engineers as late as 2025.
According to Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, there is a possibility that mid-level AI engineers could take over coding positions currently held by professionals at Meta by the year 2025, a sentiment similar to what Salesforce’s Benioff had expressed.
Contrarily, Microsoft’s Work Trend Index suggests that Artificial Intelligence is not actually taking jobs away from professionals. Quite the opposite, it seems that there’s a shortage of qualified talent available to fill job openings in these companies.
It’s significant to mention that Microsoft is actively seeking individuals skilled in artificial intelligence, leading to a 142-fold rise in LinkedIn users enhancing their profiles with AI competencies such as Copilot and ChatGPT.
Lately, Sergey Brin, one of Google’s co-founders, asserts that a 60-hour work week seems to be the optimal point for Google’s AI model builders in terms of productivity. This could potentially impact the role of software engineers by automating certain jobs.
On the contrary, numerous sources indicate that AI could merely be a passing trend, with few individuals utilizing AI tools on a daily basis. Additionally, there’s a prediction that as many as 30% of AI-focused initiatives may be discontinued by 2025 following their proof of concept.
Even though this, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates posits that AI may take over most tasks, there are elements of life which will remain unique to human interaction to uphold sincerity. Remarkably, in the past, Gates himself has raised doubts about his own job being usurped by AI as well.
