Leaked Powerpuff Girls Trailer: You Won’t Believe How Bizarre It Is!

The canceled live-action Powerpuff Girls series on The CW has unexpectedly reappeared after its trailer leaked online. The trailer presents a strange adaptation of the popular cartoon that explains why it was pulled by the network. The footage reveals an adult-oriented version of the show, where the once-superhero trio are now grown up and unintentionally caused Mojo’s death, who is portrayed as a human character instead of the anthropomorphic monkey from the original series.

In this new setting, years have passed since this incident, with Mojo’s son, Jojo, serving as Mayor of Townsville. The heroines, who have abandoned their crime-fighting roles, are reluctantly drawn back together despite leading very different lives. The leaked trailer suggests that Buttercup is now a firefighter, Bubbles struggles with alcoholism while trying to find fame in Hollywood, and Blossom has vanished from public life following the tragic mistake they made.

In 2020, the troubled TV series started its development at The CW. Warner Bros. Television Studios took charge of production and brought together a creative team that included writers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody. By February 2021, the network commissioned a pilot to be directed by Maggie Kiley. The cast was assembled with Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, Yana Perrault as Buttercup, Donald Faison playing Professor Utonium, and Tom Kenny reprising his voice role as the original series narrator. The idea was to change the Cartoon Network icons into disillusioned young adults who regretted their childhoods spent fighting crime, only to reunite when Townsville faced a new danger.

A trailer for the cancelled CW Powerpuff Girls live action show leaked and it’s legitimately one of the cringiest things I’ve ever seen.

The longer-than-three-minute sneak peek, serving as solid evidence of the idea’s feasibility, portrays the evolution of the Powerpuff Girls, who struggle with their superhero duties and express growing discontent. The performances are deliberately stilted, and the creative minds behind it were intentionally aiming for a satirical feel. Yet, it’s challenging to envision the awkward humor sustaining an entire series, despite the intriguing notion of reimagining the Powerpuff Girls in adulthood.

Why did the Live-Action Powerpuff Girls Show Get Cancelled?

As a movie reviewer looking back on the tumultuous journey of The CW’s live-action Powerpuff Girls series, I recall the initial challenges that surfaced when an unauthorized script leak sparked a wave of harsh criticisms across the web. In response to this overwhelming negative feedback, The CW swiftly announced a revamp of the production to ensure a more captivating viewing experience for audiences.

Former CW president Mark Pedowitz shed some light on the situation in 2021, stating, “Pilots are crucial because sometimes things don’t hit the mark, and this was one of those instances. The pilot simply didn’t resonate. However, we saw potential in the concept, so we decided to give it another chance.”

He further explained that the tone of the original pilot felt overly exaggerated, lacking a strong connection with reality. “The pilot might have come off as too campy,” Pedowitz said. “We wanted the series to feel more grounded and relatable for viewers.

Although initially determined to revamp the storyline, things took a turn for the worse as Bennett left the Powerpuff Girls series due to scheduling issues. By May 2023, The CW’s new major shareholders, Nexstar Media Group, finally decided to cancel the series and returned the rights back to Warner Bros. Television. Later on, creator Craig McCracken disclosed that he had serious reservations about the adaptation’s foundation, stating, “Once they become adults, they are no longer the Powerpuff Girls because if they’re adults, that’s just three superheroes who didn’t have to deal with childhood. That’s an entirely different show.

Some actors from the cast of “Powerpuff Girls” have defended the production. Cameron remarked after its cancellation that “What we filmed, I adored, and it was one of the most enjoyable experiences. I think whatever expectations you had for it, they were not met, as it turned out to be quite campy, sexy, and fun.” Cody, another co-creator, also clarified that “Transforming the Powerpuff Girls into adults was a challenge because a straightforward live-action adaptation of the original show would have been easier,” further explaining their intention to create something unique and “weird.” With the trailer now leaked, it’s clear that the end product certainly lives up to being peculiar.
