Will there be a Last of Us Part 3? What the developers say about sequel

Is there going to be a third installment of The Last of Us? Given that The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered has been released and the multiplayer game has been cancelled so Naughty Dog can concentrate on their exceptional single-player experiences, it seems highly likely that we’ll see another chapter in this series.

We’ve had a fantastic time playing The Last of Us Part 1 and Part 2 remasters, as well as appreciating HBO’s superb interpretation of the original story. However, we’re eagerly awaiting to find out how everything concludes.

It’s fortunate that the developers have hinted at intriguing possibilities regarding a possible The Last of Us Part 3. However, it seems we may need to wait patiently before we can witness the fruits of Naughty Dog’s labor.

As a devoted fan, I eagerly anticipate the unveiling of the secret projects from the renowned studio, but for now, my heart races at the prospect of The Last of Us Season 2. And with the announcement of its talented cast, I’m confident that more tears will be shared in our journey together.

Read on to discover whether a third installment of The Last of Us is in the works or not, and to catch up on the developers’ thoughts regarding the upcoming sequel.

Will there be a Last of Us Part 3?

Although an official announcement for The Last of Us Part 3 has not yet been made, there are strong indications that Sony might be inclined to have Naughty Dog create a sequel. This is primarily due to the impressive performances of The Last of Us TV series, the remake of Part 1, and now the remastered version of Part 2.

The recent remarks from Neil Druckmann, one of Naughty Dog’s co-presidents, in a YouTube documentary about the making of The Last of Us Part 2, hint that they are not only considering but also potentially working on The Last of Us Part 3.

Towards the conclusion of the Grounded II: Crafting The Last of Us Part II documentary, Druckmann shares his brainstorming for a possible third installment, emphasizing the importance of developing an idea for it.

He shares: “For quite some time, I struggled to locate that idea. However, things have shifted more recently. I don’t have a personal narrative, but I do have an idea that holds the same level of intrigue for me as one or two stories combined. It stands alone, yet it shares a common thread connecting all three.

He adds “It does feel like there’s probably one more chapter to this story.”

Exciting stuff.

Back in November 2023, it felt as though Naughty Dog itself wasn’t in much of a hurry.

To Entertainment Weekly, interviewed Nick Romano, Druckmann stated: “The Last of Us holds a special place in my heart, and I believe our studio and fans feel the same. However, at present, I can’t share any insights about the series’ future other than our dedication to The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered.

He added: “We have other projects in the works at Naughty Dog.”

The nature of this project remains undisclosed at the moment, as Neil Druckmann clarified to Natasha Jokic for BuzzFeed that it won’t be another Uncharted game, since Naughty Dog has concluded the storyline and declared “we’re done” with the series. Essentially, they are moving on to new projects.

But all is not lost, as Druckmann definitely seems keen to explore a third game.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter before the release of The Last of Us TV series, Druckmann hinted that there might be more story to explore at Naughty Dog regarding Part 3, without explicitly confirming it.

Reflecting on 2021, I can’t help but reminisce about the fascinating insights shared by Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross on the Script Apart podcast, thanks to IGN. They revealed that they had sketched out a narrative structure for a new storyline!

Druckmann mentioned earlier that Naughty Dog isn’t currently working on the game, but he believes their concept may become reality someday. Furthermore, he shared that the initial plot outline for Part 3 delves into what transpires following The Last of Us 2 events.

Neil Druckmann emphasizes that creating these (The Last of Us) games requires a significant amount of effort, and it’s crucial to be excited about the concept, ensuring it seems worthwhile and demanding.

Since it’s been seven years since the release of Part 2, you might have to be patient for quite some time until a new installment in the series becomes available.

He notes that Naughty Dog spends a considerable amount of time considering various concepts, such as whether they will develop The Last of Us Part 3, or something entirely new, or perhaps revisit an older series.

It remains to be seen whether the studio’s upcoming big release could potentially be The Last of Us Part 3; however, we would find it surprising if a third installment were not eventually produced.

What are our Last of Us 3 predictions?

Given that it could be quite a while until The Last of Us Part 3 is released, let’s delve into some potential forecasts and theories about where the narrative might lead. Just a heads up, significant spoilers await you as we proceed.

In the possibility that Ellie’s unique resistance to the cordyceps fungus could be the key to humanity’s salvation, she might decide to make the selfless sacrifice, hoping that a remedy can be discovered based on her immunity and thus reversing Joel’s actions from the first game.

It’s not only selflessness that could drive her choice; Ellie, who has endured much loss and taken many lives, appears to be deeply affected by her experiences. Her decision to let go might be seen as a form of solace and penance for the wrongs she’s been involved in, both directly and indirectly.

Different figures like Lev could see more of their narratives unfold, or alternatively, a fresh character might step into the limelight. The potential third installment could delve into power struggles in a realm brimming with renewed optimism, if a cure is discovered.

If produced, there might not be enough to distribute widely, leading to widespread anger and conflict. Would those who’ve perpetrated heinous acts like bandits, cannibals, or members of FEDRA escape justice or face punishment? Undoubtedly, they would resist if denied access to a vaccine.

FEDRA could potentially maneuver to restore the U.S. government’s authority, despite their numbers being limited.

The possibilities are endless, so we shan’t waffle any further!
