In response to fans’ concerns, Activision has officially stated that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 won’t feature the open-world structure of the original game when it releases alongside Pro Skater 3 for PS5 and PS4 in July. The fanbase initially suspected a change in Pro Skater 4’s design from the PlayStation Store‘s description, which mentioned the “epic two-minute format” in relation to the fourth title, and now this alteration has been confirmed.
To Kotaku, the publisher has confirmed that all levels in Pro Skater 4 are redesigned to adhere to the two-minute format similar to the first three games, and each level will come with a set of challenges to conquer. This major structural change deviates from the original game where players had the freedom to explore maps at their leisure while discovering challenges. However, when the PS5 and PS4 remake launches this summer, players won’t have the luxury of freely roaming maps to find these challenges.
In this mode, you can freely skate and perform tricks at each stage, but you won’t be able to accomplish the level-specific challenges. This new mode is like a transition between the original Pro Skater games and Tony Hawk’s Underground series on PS2. Many hardcore fans have been disappointed by this change in the fourth entry.
