Hard to believe, but we’ve reached the midpoint of “Reacher” Season 3. The fifth episode from this season premiered on Thursday, and it’s safe to say that the event in “Smackdown” offered a shocking twist that has been the most unexpected moment so far this season. As Jack Reacher carries out his covert missions within Beck’s estate, one of his key associates has tragically met their end in an incident that represents another significant deviation from the original Lee Child novel upon which this new season is based.
Attention Readers: The content of this article may reveal significant plot points from the most recent episode of ‘Reacher’. Proceed with caution, as you might unwittingly stumble upon spoilers…
During his undercover operation at the mansion, Reacher primarily trusts a few individuals. The DEA team he’s secretly collaborating with consists of Susan Duffy, Guillermo Villanueva, and Steven Eliot. It’s worth mentioning that Eliot, who’s relatively new to this line of work, might have committed more blunders than brilliant moves throughout the season. However, he’s been putting in his best efforts to stay afloat, especially when the entire team is struggling to keep up with overwhelming circumstances.
Eliot is a sympathetic, good-intentioned character who strives to help those around him. His demise in Episode 5 comes as a shocking blow. In this recent episode, both Duffy and Villanueva are absent, leaving Eliot on his own with the captive DEA bodyguard at the safe house. Exploiting Eliot’s compassionate nature, the prisoner asks for help with a cigarette. While Eliot isn’t paying attention, the man swallows rubbing alcohol and waits until Eliot lights a lighter. He then spits the alcohol on Eliot, causing burns, and brutally attacks the young agent to death.
Above everything else, Eliot’s demise is likely to resonate deeply with Duffy, as she has vented much of her anger at him throughout the season. He often served as her verbal sparring partner, and it’s highly probable that she will feel self-blame for his passing.
If you’re a fan of Reacher, having delved into Persuader and are following the series, the event in question might have been more startling to you than for those who merely watch the show independently. This moment signifies yet another significant deviation from the original storyline.
In the novel “Persuader,” Eliot also plays a significant role, unlike his character in the show who’s still a novice. Unlike the series where Eliot often follows behind with the kidnapped bodyguards, the book introduces two more young agents within the DEA team’s main trio. However, the most striking contrast lies in the fact that in the novel, Eliot is an integral part of the entire narrative and not just a secondary character.
In the Reacher series’ Eliot character, we find him surviving well into the narrative, almost reaching its midpoint. Remarkably, he manages to live through most of the mission’s events. Regrettably, he eventually meets his end, but it occurs quite late in the story.
In the series, Villanueva appears to embody a fusion of characteristics from both the Eliot and Villanueva novel characters. This is reminiscent of how the show portrayed Richard Beck, who combines traits from his book persona along with aspects of his mother, a character not present in the show itself.
