The article reveals that there might be more to Foggy Nelson‘s death than initially thought. Viewers were taken aback when the reintroduction of Daredevil by Marvel Studios ended the life of Foggy (Elden Henson), one of Nelson, Murdock & Page, in the first episode itself, effectively closing the door on the series that concluded at Netflix in 2018. However, it’s important to note that Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) seemed to hear Foggy’s fading heartbeat and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) saw him in a pool of blood with a stopped heart, suggesting he was shot by Bullseye (Wilson Bethel). This raises the possibility that Foggy’s death might not be as final as it appears.
It’s not dissimilar to how Foggy seemed to die in the comics. Matt, with his heightened senses, heard Foggy’s heart beating as he was brutally stabbed by a prison inmate. However, it was later revealed that Foggy had been resuscitated and moved into FBI witness protection. This unexpected twist left Matt unaware for months. Intriguingly, some fans believe they’ve found a hint suggesting that Foggy’s death might have been faked.
Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s Head of Television, has confirmed that Charlie Cox (Henson) will reprise his role for “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2. However, the specifics of how this will happen remain undisclosed. Will Foggy appear in flashbacks? Could it be an Elektra-style resurrection by The Hand? Or maybe they’ll use the classic plot device of a long-lost twin brother? The truth, much like the devil, lies within the finer details.
Prior to the series’ debut, it was disclosed that in the version conceived by the original showrunners Chris Ord and Matt Corman, Foggy and Karen were absent from the “Born Again” storyline, contradicting the finale promise of “Daredevil” season 3: the establishment of Nelson, Murdock & Page law firm.
Not only was there no Foggy, but his death would have occurred off-screen.
In his conversation with GamesRadar+, Scardapane mentioned it was quite unusual. He explained that the decision about Foggy’s demise was made prior to his involvement, but in the initial version, it happened off-screen. However, he felt that such a significant and impactful event should be experienced visually and its aftermath should be seen on Karen, Matt, and the world. He added that only a few factors could have compelled Foggy to remove his mask or suppress his identity, and this was one of them. Thus, they didn’t make the decision lightly.
As a passionate film buff, I can tell you that we’ve taken things to the next level. We’ve seamlessly integrated this significant event into an epic action scene. The moment you lay eyes on it, your focus will be captivated, your pulse racing. When the event unfolds, I believe you’ll feel a sense of awe and realization – ‘wow, everything has just transformed. Nothing is the same anymore.’
During a creative revamp in 2023, Scardapane was tasked with reworking the series. Some aspects from the original were necessary to preserve because of plot twists in the nine-episode season, such as Foggy’s demise.
However, as Scardapane pointed out in a pre-premiere interview with Empire Magazine in February, he emphasized to the producers that “Daredevil’s series simply can’t go on without Karen and Foggy.” He stated, “They are Matt’s family, and they form the core of his world. If you remove them, it needs a convincing reason, and if that rationale doesn’t seem genuine, then they shouldn’t be removed in the first place.
In simpler terms, Scardapane stated that the earlier version of the series was more about exploring uncharted territory rather than sticking to what we know from our world. However, he pointed out that in their quest for innovation, they may have overlooked some crucial elements that were essential to the story’s core.
I stood firm on this issue to the point where I was prepared to lose my job over it. The final episode of season 3 of our Netflix series ended with a dream, and the names on that napkin were crucial for providing context to our characters. Overlooking that dream wasn’t an option for me.
If you eliminate one-third of the characters Matt, Karen and Foggy at the beginning of the first episode, how will you fulfill their shared dream of Nelson, Murdock & Page law firm? It seems unlikely that Foggy Nelson could be resurrected after his death, as his fate is significant throughout the season. We’ll have to wait and see if this happens.
