In Monster Hunter Wilds, the elusive Speartuna fish is one of the scarcest species to come across, and capturing it is no easy feat. However, for those aiming to craft an exceptional-looking Great Sword, obtaining a Speartuna Fin is essential, and this can only be done by successfully catching a Speartuna.
This tutorial provides information about the places Speartuna can be found, the optimal times to catch it, and some tips on how to do so effectively. Let me break it down for you.
Where to Find Speartuna Fin in Monster Hunter Wilds
The Speartuna Fish is usually spotted in regions 13 and 17 within the vibrant Scarlet Forest during the Fallow period, specifically during morning hours. You’ll find precise locations of its appearance clearly marked on the map provided above. There’s no mistaking the Speartuna; it resembles a miniature Swordfish and is larger than all other fish swimming in that area.
The top-left corner of the Map screen provides you with information about both the current time of day and the season.

Occasionally, Speartuna fishing areas can be marked by turbulent waters. These locations are often recognizable due to a circular patch of white, foamy water caused by the rough currents (as depicted above). This foamy water situation typically signals the presence of a Speartuna, although it may not always be readily apparent because the water isn’t necessarily crystal clear.
How to Get Tuff Joint Bait
In the game, only Speartuna can be enticed by the unique bait called Tuff Joint Bait. You get this special item as a reward during the side-quest “The Catch of a Lifetime,” which becomes available in Chapter 4. To obtain it, chat with Kanya at the Scarlet Forest base camp once you’ve completed all prior fishing quests and progressed to Chapter 4.
How to Change Season To Fallow
In your base camp or portable shelter, you have the ability to switch between different seasons and times of day. In the ‘Grill a Meal’ section of the menu, look for the ‘Rest‘ option. Click on it, then opt for ‘Fallow’ and ‘Morning.’ Remember that each Rest requires 300 Guild Points.
You can alter the season and time in your tent at base camp or pop-up shelter. In the ‘Grill a Meal’ section of the menu, you’ll find the ‘Rest‘ option. Select it, choose ‘Fallow’ and ‘Morning.’ However, keep in mind that each Rest costs 300 Guild Points.
The Rest option only appears after you reach High-Rank.
How to Catch Speartuna in Monster Hunter Wilds
The Speartuna is categorized as a ‘Whopper’, implying that catching it differs from common fish. To successfully land one, anglers should tire it out, allow the lure line to relax, and track its movements before pulling it up. Here’s a detailed guide on how to catch a Speartuna:
1. Tire the fish by continuously reeling it in to exhaust it.
2. Let the lure line loosen slightly to give the fish room to move freely.
3. Observe and follow the movements of the fish underwater.
4. Once you see it making a predictable pattern, slowly reel in your line while maintaining its trajectory.
5. Keep reeling steadily until the fish is close enough for easy capture.
- Cast the fishing line with the Tuff Joint Bait near the Speartuna.
- Use the slow reel method to get a bite.
- On the Controller, you can slow reel by very slowly moving the Left-Stick in a circle.
- On PC (KB/M), you have to press W/S repeatedly (after testing, it appears that pressing W/S first to attract the Speartuna’s attention before spamming W/A/S/D is the most reliable way to get a bite).
- Once the Speartuna bites, it will start trying to free itself by moving rapidly in the left or right direction. Follow its movements.
- On Controller, use the Left-Stick.
- On PC (KB/M), use the A/D keys.
- Occasionally, the Speartuna will jump out of the water. When this happens, you need to follow its movements one more time:
- On Controller, use the Left-Stick and hold RT/R2.
- On PC (KB/M), use the W/A/S/D keys and hold the Middle-Mouse button.
- Eventually, the Speartuna will stop all movements and stand still in the water. This is the most important step: reeling it in.
- On Controller, move Left-Stick up and down very quickly.
- On PC (KB/M), spam the W/S keys, just like when slow reeling.
And that’s it, the Speartuna fish will be caught and you will have gained a Speartuna Fin.
If you can’t manage to catch the Speartuna once it bites, it’ll vanish until the break of dawn on the following day.
