Although it didn’t take off as anticipated, developers BioWare and Electronic Arts are currently working on a game where Liara T’Soni takes on a significant role. No updates about the development have been shared since 2023, but there is speculation that a new Mass Effect franchise could draw fans of the series back into space once again.
The game “Exodus,” coming from Austin-based Archetype Entertainment and helmed by veterans from large AAA studios such as Naughty Dog and BioWare, will be the initial release in a new sci-fi franchise. This production kicked off in 2020, under the publishing wing of Wizards of the Coast. If you’re a fan yearning for another Mass Effect experience, this AAA series could well provide the satisfying continuation you’ve been seeking.
Exodus Is The Mass Effect Fans Have Been Waiting For
On the official website for the game titled “Exodus“, it’s described that this is the initial project from the new studio led by renowned RPG creator James Ohlen. This next-generation role-playing game combines captivating storytelling with powerful emotional resonance, offering players extensive freedom of choice and contemporary AAA gaming mechanics. The narrative revolves around the effects of player decisions as a result of Time Dilation, and how these choices can drastically alter the lives of those we care about most.
Space has become a significant focus in entertainment, with top games and films exploring distant galaxies. One movie that delves into Time Dilation is Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar”, which I particularly enjoy. When the game “Exodus” was unveiled at The Game Awards 2023, it was announced that Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey would make his video game debut, voicing the character of C.C. Orlev for the first time.
Since the announcement in 2023, developers have consistently kept fans, known as Founders, informed through blog posts and short stories about their progress. In fact, they’ve developed an entire world without the game being released yet, demonstrating their commitment to storytelling. For me, Exodus has been a game I’ve been keeping an eye on for quite a while now. Given that it’s their debut project, there’s a strong possibility that this could launch a new, high-profile gaming series. It’s noteworthy that studios haven’t attempted to create new intellectual properties (IP) much recently, given the numerous established franchises in the gaming industry. The Mass Effect franchise, for instance, boasts a dedicated fanbase that has grown from its engaging narrative, compelling characters, and solid world-building. Judging by the trailers for Exodus, it appears that all signs point to this being a significant success. Although it’s been a while since we’ve had a mainline Mass Effect installment, Exodus looks like it could deliver what fans loved about the BioWare series.
Watching Archetype build a AAA franchise from scratch is thrilling, given the enthusiasm and respect surrounding it.
