Danny Dyer explains why Marching Powder is not a Football Factory sequel

Before its premiere, conversations about the movie “Marching Powder” have primarily revolved around the reunion of actor Danny Dyer and director Nick Love, who last worked together on “The Football Factory” back in 2004, marking over two decades since their collaboration.

Both movies have many similarities, as they are set in the realm of football hooliganism, feature excessive drinking and strong drug usage, and exhibit a comparable style, mood, and humor.

He clarified that there’s a significant gap between “Football Factory” and the upcoming movie. While they pay homage to it, they aim to avoid creating a similar production altogether.

As a supporter, I’d like to clarify that unlike some may perceive it as a sequel, this film is actually a mature and intellectually stimulating piece. At its core, it’s a heartfelt love story, set within a specific culture or world. The protagonist, who is deeply immersed in this environment, finds himself stuck in a stagnant phase, and the narrative delves significantly into themes of addiction.

In response to a question about if football hooliganism culture and perceptions of it have evolved since his roles in Football Factory and later in Real Football Factories, Dyer stated that he believes “our society underwent a total transformation.

He expressed: “Currently, we’re in an unusual situation. Politically, there’s a significant amount of discord. Somehow, love seems to have vanished. A new generation is emerging with their rowdy behavior, undoubtedly, but it’s noticeable that teams at the lower end of the divisions are acting immaturely and behaving like youngsters.

He continued, “It seems rather absurd, the state of the world we live in.” However, let me clarify, we are not mocking or making light of it. Regardless of the culture, it is crucial to avoid derision and contempt.

Regardless of my past endeavors, such as creating a documentary on the subject, I have never found an answer to the question: Why do men behave as they do? It’s a complex and challenging topic, much like navigating through a field filled with hidden dangers.

What we’re referring to is the sense of belonging these young men, who seem to be struggling, have been searching for in their lives. It’s important to recognize this need, rather than judging or looking down upon it.

The narrative of Marching Powder focuses on Jack, an older individual who hasn’t outgrown his rebellious past, as he finds himself in legal trouble following his arrest. A stern judge gives him six weeks to rectify his life and salvage his marriage before the court steps in.

In the film’s cast, along with the former EastEnders actor, you’ll find Stephanie Leonidas, Calum MacNab, and a part for his own child, Arty.
