As a passionate gamer, I’ve been captivated by the developer-led trailers and videos that have sparked renewed interest in PS5 and PS4 games, and let me tell you, it’s not just clever marketing. Diving into about 90 minutes of Atomfall’s early gameplay, I can confidently say this isn’t hype – it’s the real deal! The alternate universe is a gripping tale, and the enigma at play keeps me on the edge of my seat with intrigue and excitement. If the full game maintains this quality, then Atomfall won’t be a sleeper hit; it will receive all the love and attention it truly deserves.
Intriguingly, just the premise draws you in: you find yourself waking up in a northern English village enclosed within a quarantine zone following a nuclear catastrophe. Five years have passed since the explosion, and things aren’t as they seem. Monstrous creatures inhabit the wilderness, and cults thrive on the outskirts. Your mission is to unearth the hidden truths that this tranquil countryside conceals.
In our digital gameplay (streamed using Parsec), we found ourselves in Casterfell Woods, already several hours into the main plot. One character instructed us to pay a visit to Mother Jago at the mine entrance. The intrigue of Atomfall lies in the fact that though it seems like a standard objective, there’s no certainty that it will ultimately lead anywhere.
With an investigator’s instinct running deep within you, your mission is to discern truth from illusion, negotiate for valuable insights, and even venture into hostile territories to unravel the mystery. Rebellion presents this scenario, where some details are deliberately withheld, and a definitive resolution isn’t guaranteed. It’s an engaging premise that, during our brief playtime of the game, has proven quite compelling indeed.
Atomfall employs an open-world design without quest markers. When you uncover a new plot point, it gets logged and the linked location is marked on your map. These plot points are discovered through exploration and conversations with characters. For instance, we stumbled upon audio recordings from a crashed helicopter and secret notes hidden in basements while exploring.
In this game, you have the freedom to choose which clues or paths to follow to explore the area and uncover secrets. However, keep in mind that some leads might not pan out, potentially blocking certain storylines for you. So, there’s an element of risk associated with your choices.
Also, it’s important to note that Rebellion doesn’t guarantee your satisfaction with the ending, so the consequences of your actions are real and significant. This makes the game ideal for multiple playthroughs, allowing you to revisit missed clues and gain a deeper understanding of the entire storyline.
In the period between discoveries, combat plays a crucial role, although due to streaming the game, we couldn’t definitively make any conclusions. We battled both online technical issues and in-game enemies using cricket bats, axes, and guns against cultists and soldiers. Remarkably, our character carried an abundant supply of ammunition, with even more readily available from the surroundings. You’ll find yourself gathering a vast amount of resources for crafting while exploring new locations, including bullets. If you avoid using all your weapons indiscriminately, it appears that you can accumulate a substantial arsenal – or perhaps this was just for the demo purposes.
To fully evaluate Atomfall on PS5, we first need to experience it directly. However, what appears non-negotiable is the intriguing mystery that forms its backbone. In the brief 90 minutes we played, the most engaging aspect was discovering fresh leads to pursue. We met new characters whose insights added depth to our understanding, and uncovered locations previously missing from our map. This process was immensely satisfying, and if extended across a full game filled with dead ends and plot twists, it seems poised to deliver one of 2025’s most captivating narrative experiences.
