Expressing enthusiasm over the launch of cooperative adventure game “Split Fusion,” its director, Josef Fares, has voiced his disapproval towards microtransactions in video games. In a response video addressing comments about his games online, Fares discusses how microtransactions can detrimentally affect the creative process and design of video games.
In response to the statement “No loot boxes, no microtransactions, no BS. Words to live by,” Fares agreed, adding “Absolutely. That principle applies to everything we do at Hazelight.
Fares commented, “I believe such profit-driven decisions impact the way games are designed. Whenever a design choice is made with the intention of generating more income within the game, I consider it a significant issue that hinders our industry’s creativity.
Apart from replying to other remarks, Fares also acknowledges a comment linking the newly launched “Split Fiction” to a “sequel of the divorce simulator,” which is a reference to the earlier game by Hazelight called “It Takes Two.
Not a divorce, my friend,” corrected Fares. “It’s really about fostering our friendship even deeper. So, brace yourself for some fun times that will bring us even closer together.
Historically, Fares has been vocal about several issues within the game industry. Specifically, he criticized Ubisoft last February for lacking cooperative gaming experiences in their newer titles.
In an interview, Fares expressed his surprise that other publishers aren’t following the trend of creating games similar to the ones we are currently playing, which people seem to enjoy. He points specifically to Ubisoft and wonders why they haven’t capitalized on the iconic character Sam Fisher by developing a game that only features split-screen play.
Hazelight’s games primarily focus on two-player cooperative play, such as in games like “A Way Out” and “It Takes Two”. Interestingly, their first game, however, was the solo experience of “Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons”.
Dude, skip the multiplayer nonsense and go for single-player, but make it clear it’s a split-screen game,” I suggested. “Bam! Instant success, and I promise they’ll sell tons of copies like that. They don’t have to follow Hazelight’s model, but if they listen to this advice, it’ll be a hit for them – it’s as simple as that, Ubisoft. This idea is on the house from me.
The game titled “Split Fiction” is now available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. This unique title centers around two characters who find themselves trapped within digital simulations. Remarkably, you only need to purchase one copy of “Split Fiction”. Your co-op partner will receive a Friend’s Pass, enabling them to join you in your online adventures together without the need for an additional purchase.
