Amazon’s Rejected James Bond TV Shows Reportedly Revealed (Could These Happen Now?)

Before I got the reins of the James Bond franchise, I had proposed several spin-off series ideas to Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, all of which were declined. According to The Hollywood Reporter, my team at Amazon was particularly interested in developing shows centered around characters like Miss Moneypenny, Felix Leiter, and even a female 007. However, Broccoli and Wilson, who have the final say on anything Bond-related, consistently rejected these ideas as they were only focused on creating theatrical feature films. At one point, I believed that MGM executive Courtenay Valenti, known for her ability to sway Barbara, could persuade them, but that proved unsuccessful. As a dedicated fan, I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for the Bond franchise!

As a movie enthusiast, I’d rephrase it this way: Over time, my relationship with Amazon Studios’ bigwigs took a turn for the worse. To be honest, hearing their head, Jennifer Salke, casually label the Bond franchise as “content” didn’t sit well with me. Furthermore, establishing meetings with Amazon’s top executives seemed like an uphill battle for me, which was quite frustrating.

Back in February, I learned about an exciting collaboration between Amazon, MGM, Broccoli, and Wilson. As a fan, I was thrilled to hear about it! Interestingly, while Broccoli and Wilson still hold onto their stake in the iconic Bond franchise, they’re stepping back from creative decision-making responsibilities. That means Amazon now has complete control over this beloved property – a move that took even the talented Timothy Dalton, a former James Bond actor, by surprise!

In 2022, Amazon wrapped up its $8.5 billion purchase of MGM, yet there hasn’t been significant advancement on the next James Bond movie since then. The production of Bond 26 has halted, with no signs it will start filming for at least another year. There have also been whispers about potential James Bond television series for Amazon Prime Video, but the focus remains on creating the feature films by the Broccoli family. This lack of progress has reportedly caused some irritation for Amazon, prompting them to team up in a joint venture.

It’s evident that Amazon didn’t invest such a large sum into MGM just to produce occasional James Bond movies every couple of years. The partnership wouldn’t have occurred if Broccoli and Wilson’s vision for the studio didn’t align with Amazon’s. Given Amazon’s past attempts at creating a Bond TV series, it seems plausible that a Prime Video series is in the works soon. Whether an earlier proposal gets revived will likely hinge on how the development of Bond 26 proceeds. As the franchise transitions into a new phase, Amazon might opt to maintain consistency across all projects, which could mean a possible TV series featuring characters like Felix Leiter or even introducing new favorites such as Q or Moneypenny. These fresh characters could potentially generate excitement for further tales.

Prioritizing the correct elements for the upcoming film, “Bond 26,” is crucial due to the amount of work involved. Yet, it seems Amazon is considering ways to broaden the Bond universe. While some fans worry this might dilute the James Bond intellectual property, if managed skillfully, these ventures could provide intriguing insights into well-known Bond characters. For example, a Felix Leiter series could resemble “Andor,” offering thrilling espionage drama with unexpected twists that captivate viewers.
