Exciting Cast Confirmed for Severus Snape and McGonagall in New Harry Potter Series!

A week following the announcement that John Lithgow will portray Albus Dumbledore on HBO’s Harry Potter television series, it seems that the production has secured their roles for Severus Snape and Professor McGonagall as well.

As per an exclusive report by Deadline, it appears that the Oscar-nominated actress, Janet McTeer, is in discussions to portray Professor Minerva McGonagall, and Emmy nominee Paapa Essiedu is said to be finalizing a deal to take on the role of Professor Severus Snape.

Since December 2024, there have been whispers about Essiedu potentially becoming a part of the cast, but no official confirmation has been given yet. However, as of March 8th, it seems quite possible, although HBO has chosen not to address these rumors directly.

HBO acknowledged that due to the popularity of this show, there may be many rumors and speculations circulating. However, they will only reveal specifics once they’ve completed the necessary negotiations.

In the magical world of Harry Potter, I’ve come to understand that characters like Severus Snape and Professor McGonagall hold significant importance. Previously, these iconic roles were brought to life on screen by the remarkable actors Alan Rickman and Dame Maggie Smith, who sadly are no longer with us.

The TV show will draw from all seven books in the series, and it’s planned to span over a decade, maintaining the grandeur, affection, and attention to detail that have made this popular franchise renowned, as stated by Max.

The series, which spans a period of ten years, originates from writer and producer Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod. At a gathering for Max last December, Gardiner revealed that the upcoming series will adhere to Snape’s “canonical” age, making him just 31 in the show and significantly younger than his film portrayal. Given this, the choice of actor Matthew James Thomas (Essiedu) seems particularly suitable for the role.

As of now, it remains unconfirmed, but both actors possess a rich background in acting, and taking on the world of Potter promises to be an immense challenge. Notably, McTeer is renowned for her roles in Ozark, Tumbleweeds, The Menu, and more recently, KAOS.

Essiedu is known for leading various television series such as The Capture, Gangs of London, The Lazarus Project, and most recently appears in Black Mirror’s episode Demon 79.

In addition, both actors will revisit HBO, where McTeer previously appeared as Clementine, Winston Churchill’s spouse, in the movie “Into The Storm”. On the other hand, Essiedu was featured in Michaela Coel’s successful series “I May Destroy You” on the same network.

It’s worth noting that Lithgow has recently been verified as taking on the role of Headmaster Dumbledore at Hogwarts. In an interview with Screen Rant, he shared that this revelation came entirely unexpected for him.

I’ve just received news from the Sundance Film Festival about another movie offer, which is a significant decision as it will shape the final phase of my career. However, I’m thrilled about the prospect.

Lithgow also shared that he will be adopting an English accent for the character, stating: “He’s undeniably British. There’s even debate about a non-British actor being cast for this role. He’s such a renowned figure. I’m half-English.
