Thor’s Executioner Aims to Kill or Save the God of Thunder

In the latest installment of “Immortal Thor,” penned by Al Ewing and illustrated by Jan Bazaluda, readers are treated to another captivating episode in the tale of the immortal god’s demise. This comic book series has delved deep into Norse mythology, unveiling the mysterious land of Utgard, home to dark deities akin to those of Asgard. Since the beginning of the series, Thor has been engaged in a relentless battle against these gods. Each twist and turn in the story has been an integral part of his ongoing conflict with them. Moved by compassion for others, Thor embarks on a journey to Utgard, only to encounter an unexpected adversary at its entrance – none other than Skurge, the Asgardian warrior once known as the Executioner.

Throughout the epic tale of Thor, Skurge has emerged as a captivating figure. Initially, he clashed with Thor while aligned with the Enchantress, who has been pivotal in the series ‘Immortal Thor.’ However, during the cataclysmic event known as Ragnarok, Skurge switched allegiances and sided with Asgard. Tragically, Skurge met his end while protecting the bridge of Gjallerbu. Since then, he has resurfaced on multiple occasions. In ‘Immortal Thor’ #21, we learn about Skurge’s afterlife and uncover why he is willing to go to extremes, even sacrificing Thor himself, to save him.

Skurge’s Sacrifice Saved Thor’s Life and He has Held Thor’s Death Ever Since

In a unique twist, Al Ewing has been breathing fresh life into Thor mythology by introducing novel perspectives, such as the case with Skurge’s self-sacrifice during Ragnarok. Rather than perishing along with the rest of Asgard, Skurge chose to die on the bridge of Gjallerbu in place of Thor, thereby sparing the God of Thunder and sending his own death to Valhalla instead. Each time Skurge was resurrected, Thor’s untimely demise accompanied him, yearning for release into the world. This restless spirit finally managed to break free, leading to the current predicament that Thor finds himself in now. Tormented by the vow Thor made never to allow anyone else to suffer in his stead, Skurge was driven to seek out Odin.

Odin has exerted tremendous effort not just to ensure that Thor ascends the throne of Asgard, even sacrificing himself in the process to shape him into an ideal ruler. However, Odin is dismayed by the impending demise of Thor, and he and Skurge concur that it’s essential for Skurge to do everything within his power to prevent this fate. Odin grants Skurge a final leave from Valhalla, enabling him to gather the strength necessary to confront Thor; each time Skurge’s axe draws blood from Thor, he gains more power. Skurge desires to face Utgard, so that he can reclaim Thor’s life again. The only way to achieve this is by killing Skurge, an act that would compel Thor to break his oath concerning his death. Skurge is prepared to sacrifice himself to prevent Thor from meeting the same fate, a prospect that Thor is not yet ready for.

Skurge’s Actions Drive Thor to Show Off How Much Better He’s Gotten

The indestructible Thor has demonstrated his worthiness for Asgard’s throne not only through physical might but also intellectual prowess. Unlike before, Thor employs strategy rather than relying solely on brute force and combat skills. Skurge’s axe may ultimately be the tool to defeat Thor, yet Thor chooses not to kill Skurge due to his vow. This battle doesn’t follow conventional victory paths, prompting Thor to think creatively. Skurge remains determined, and Utgard is a treacherous landscape; Thor requires assistance to navigate it all, and Skurge was assigned by Odin himself to ensure Thor’s survival.

In this situation, Thor chooses wisely by keeping his promise to Odin while also respecting Skurge’s pledge. The battle concludes with Thor inviting Skurge to join him in Utgard. It remains uncertain if this move will prevent Thor’s impending demise, as the story ends with both characters being trapped by Utgard-Loki, hinting that Thor’s death is a certain possibility. However, being a wise ruler, Thor uses his allies to strengthen himself. Skurge is ready to sacrifice himself for Thor’s survival, and he may soon face that fate in the near future.
