These days, being deeply invested in a TV series can carry some risk. With production delays prolonged and finales that don’t quite live up to expectations, investing significant time into a show might sometimes feel like taking a gamble. This sentiment is shared by Netflix subscribers, who have come to associate the streaming giant with quick cancellations. Shows such as Santa Clarita Diet, Dead Boy Detectives, and Lockwood & Co. are just a few instances of series that were abruptly terminated by Netflix. However, it seems that the cancellation of The OA left its fans particularly disappointed. This show ran for two seasons before being unexpectedly canceled in 2019. The sudden ending left many questions unanswered and sparked a persistent campaign to bring the series back. To this day, six years later, supporters of The OA remain hopeful that it may yet receive a fitting conclusion.
The OA, a series co-created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, seamlessly combines aspects of science fiction, fantasy, and supernatural elements. The story revolves around Prairie Johnson (portrayed by Marling), who was once blind but reappears after an unexplained seven-year absence with her sight restored, now referring to herself as “The OA” or Original Angel. Instead of sharing her experiences with her adoptive family or the authorities, she recruits a diverse band of strangers and confides in them the secrets surrounding her disappearance. Needless to say, she has plenty of those!
Never Gonna Give You Up
Although “The OA” didn’t make a significant impact with major awards and didn’t immediately captivate a vast audience, it resonated deeply with a dedicated fan base. Regrettably, this wasn’t enough to save the show from being cancelled. However, the assumption that low viewership numbers led to its demise is questionable. Four years after its cancellation, “The OA” continued to draw viewers, as evidenced by the 24 million hours watched between January 2023 and June 2023. While these numbers didn’t break any records, they did show that fans of “The OA” remained loyal.
Despite the show’s cancellation, fans remain optimistic about its potential return. As early as 2019, a dedicated fan initiated an online petition to revive the series, gathering over 8,000 signatures in the process. This yearning for closure extends into 2025, with fans of The OA making their voices heard on the Netflix subreddit. They’re not alone in their desire to see all questions answered, but the show’s high production costs might make a comeback unfeasible. Unfortunately, Netflix executives deemed the series too expensive to continue for another three planned seasons.
Never Gonna Let You Down
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in July 2024, actor Brandon Perea expressed his positive outlook regarding the potential continuation of “The OA”. He said, “I’m someone who believes the story isn’t finished.” He further added, “I think there’s a way to carry on the narrative, though I don’t know what it is. Nevertheless, I’m ready and eager to rejoin The OA whenever it’s time again.” Perea bases his optimism on the numerous unresolved plot points in the series, stating, “It seems like there are some stories that we haven’t fully concluded yet.
As per Batmanglij, Netflix proposed a chance for him and Marling to conclude the series with a standalone film. However, due to various practical issues, the alignment of schedules and other factors didn’t work out for the show creators.
In a November 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Batmanglij expressed that the ending of The OA caught him off guard. However, they had proposed wrapping up the series in a movie, but they declined. He explained that combining three seasons into one would require a conclusion, which could then be handed over to Max or Hulu, or similar platforms. Batmanglij stated that he sees no financial sense in leaving numerous unfinished stories on their platform.
Regardless if Netflix revives The OA or not, it’s clear that enthusiasts of this series won’t disappear anytime soon. Furthermore, it seems that Batmanglij and Marling continue to dedicate themselves to narrating their tale in a unique manner, implying that the delay may ultimately prove worthwhile.
