Mickey 17 Wins the Box Office This Weekend (But is it a Bomb?)

There’s been lots of excitement surrounding Bong Joon Ho’s new movie, Mickey 17, which has hit theaters and is aiming to create a big impact at the box office. As reported by THR, it looks set to take the weekend earnings crown with an estimated $7.7 million on its first day, suggesting a domestic total of around $18-$20 million for the weekend. This is certainly good news, but it’s not quite the massive success one might expect given the film’s substantial production budget.

The film Mickey 17 was estimated to cost approximately $118 million to produce, excluding marketing expenses. However, there’s a silver lining: Mickey 17 has earned $18.7 million internationally, with an impressive $11.4 million coming from South Korea. If it manages to earn another $18 million domestically, its total worldwide earnings would be around $36 million. To reach its production budget of $118 million, it will need to make significant strides in its domestic box office performance.

In its fourth week, Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World is holding strong at the second position in U.S. theaters, and it’s projected to earn approximately $8.7 million domestically this weekend. As of March 6th, the film has already made $168 million within the U.S., with an additional $178 million from international box office sales. The combined total before this weekend was $346 million worldwide.

3 out of the top 5 films share an equal position with estimated earnings of approximately $4 million each. Prior to the weekend, Last Breath had accumulated a global total of $10 million, while Paddington in Peru boasted a staggering worldwide total of $139 million and The Monkey had made $41 million globally.

As for Mickey 17, it remains unclear if it will sustain itself and potentially recover its costs. The journey won’t be simple, but positive word of mouth could aid its progress. Currently, the movie has a 78% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, along with an audience score that is only slightly higher at 79%. It also received a B grade from CinemaScore.

On March 21st, the upcoming major movie in theaters is Snow White. However, there’s been quite a bit of discussion about this film too, particularly concerning its opening weekend performance. When it comes to Disney’s live-action adaptations, they can either make a strong start, or have a slower beginning but end up having staying power. Regrettably, some of these adaptations haven’t managed to gain much traction at all.
