The people of Luxembourg are in mourning.
In this European nation, Prince Frederik, the offspring of Prince Robert (cousin to Grand Duke Henri) and his spouse Princess Julie, passed away following a prolonged struggle against PolG mitochondrial disease – an uncommon genetic ailment. At the time of his demise, he was 22 years old.
On March 7th, Robert revealed that his son had tragically passed away in Paris on March 1st. This was a day after he gathered his parents, siblings, Prince Alexander and Princess Charlotte, along with other relatives, to his room for what turned out to be their final conversation with him.
In his statement posted on the PolG Foundation’s website, the 56-year-old stated that just before making other comments, Frederik had asked him a question: “Dad, am I worthy of your pride?” The clarity and impact of these words were as unexpected as the significance of the moment was deep.
Robert expressed that even though the solution was quite straightforward, something he’d encountered numerous times before, he wanted to assure his son that he had given everything possible during his brief yet profound life, and that it was now time for him to progress forward.
The late prince’s father stated, “Frederik is not just my Superhero, but also our family’s and many dear friends’. Through his PolG Foundation, he has become a hero to countless individuals across the globe. One of his special powers was his knack for inspiring others and leading by example.
Apart from the others, Robert too disclosed the information that Frederik conveyed to his relatives, including his mother who stood by him throughout 15 years, during his last moments.
In his characteristic style, he bid us goodbye with a variety of sentiments – some heartfelt, some insightful, some instructive. Just as Frederik always does, he concluded by sharing a long-standing family joke, bringing laughter and comfort to us all in those final moments.
At the tender age of 14, Frederik received a diagnosis for PolG mitochondrial disease, an illness brought about by genetic mutations that currently has no cure. This condition leads to problems with various organs and their eventual failure. Sadly, he passed away just days before his 23rd birthday.
As a child, you have so many dreams and ambitions, things you long to achieve. The potential seems limitless, he said in a movie about the disease that the PolG Foundation shared last September. “I wasn’t completely aware of all the implications of PolG when I was initially diagnosed. It’s a gradual process where, over time, the world seems to shrink and shrink.
Robert stated that Frederik “constantly emphasized that he didn’t want this terrible illness to be his identity,” yet it inadvertently shaped him, and eventually influenced the purpose of The POLG Foundation. “In this context,” he continued, “Frederik utilized his considerable creative abilities.
The father of the deceased prince expressed that he had been informed by a trusted family acquaintance about a conversation they shared, in which Frederik stated, “I am grateful for being born with this illness. Though it may claim my life…and even if my parents can’t save me, I trust they will be able to save other children.
