An investigation is underway regarding a University of Pittsburgh student who has been reported missing during their spring break vacation in the Dominican Republic.
20-year-old Sudiksha Konanki, an Indian citizen residing in Virginia, United States, along with five fellow female students from her college, vanished during a trip to Punta Cana last week while they were traveling together.
On March 6, she was reported missing and it seems she disappeared some time between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. that day. A representative from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office shared this information with NBC News, mentioning that they are exploring every possible scenario.
Currently, the situation ranges from being an unintentional incident to a deliberate act, according to the representative. At present, everything is being taken into account. No possibilities have been dismissed yet.
On the day she vanished, it was reported by Sheriff Michael Chapman that Konanki had visited the beach with companions. However, unlike them, she failed to return.
The Indian Embassy in the Dominican Republic is spearheading efforts alongside the U.S. Department of State and local authorities on-site, according to their representative.
The civil defense agency of the Dominican Republic, Defensa Civil Dominicana, announced on March 6 that Konanki went missing early in the morning while walking along a beach in the province of Altagracia. They stated that ongoing search and rescue operations are being conducted, utilizing drones, helicopters, boats, divers, and canine units, as reported by news channel Telenoticias on March 9.
Instead of going back to the U.S. as planned, students who journeyed with Konanki chose to stay and assist in the search efforts. This was confirmed by a spokesperson for the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office. Meanwhile, Konanki’s parents have made their way from Virginia to the Dominican Republic, as reported by Pittsburgh TV station WTAE.
At Riu Hotels, we’re extremely troubled by the vanishing of one of our guests, last spotted during the early hours of today. We’ve been collaborating extensively with local law enforcement agencies such as the Police and Navy, to conduct a comprehensive search for this individual.
It has been reported that Konanki stands at approximately 5 feet, 3 inches in height, possesses black hair and brown eyes, and was recently spotted in the early hours of the day. A flyer circulating on social media, posted by Dominican Today – a local English-language news outlet, describes her wearing a brown bikini, large round earrings, a metal designer anklet, and multiple bracelets at the time.
Prior to her disappearance, the student was lodging at the Riu República hotel. In response to this incident, Riu Hotels & Resorts have been collaborating closely with local law enforcement agencies like the Police and Navy for a comprehensive search operation. This statement was made to Dominican Today by the hotel chain.
The University of Pittsburgh is currently in communication with the Konanki family and local authorities in Loudoun County, Virginia. A representative shared with NBC News that they have extended their full assistance to aid in locating her and ensuring her safe return.
