As a fervent fan, I wholeheartedly agree that Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal are the standout stars in “The Accountant 2,” based on early responses to this long-awaited sequel. In the 2016 original, it was Christian Wolff (Affleck), a brilliant yet enigmatic CPA with exceptional accounting skills, who found himself at odds with his brother Brax (Bernthal), a formidable hitman and private security contractor. Meanwhile, the impending retirement of Financial Crimes Deputy Director Ray King (J.K. Simmons) led him to assign/coerce Agent Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) into uncovering the true identity of “The Accountant,” a man known only by his criminal associates.
In the sequel directed by Gavin O’Connor, Affleck and Bernthal reprise their roles as brothers Christian and Brax, who are estranged but come together to aid Agent Medina in solving a fresh enigma: the identity of Ray King’s killer. Since Christian, the accountant for the mob, has a long list of clients that includes drug lords, weapons dealers, money launderers, and assassins, their investigation into King’s murder draws the interest of some of the deadliest killers worldwide.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’ve been wondering if I should splurge on tickets for the upcoming sequel to “The Accountant” or if it’s better left untouched according to the critics. From the initial reviews that surfaced after its premiere at SXSW on Sunday, it appears the action-thriller might be a step up from the 2016 original, which received a less than stellar 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Here are some snippets of the first reviews from SXSW:
1. “The Accountant 2 delivers an engaging and thrilling narrative that keeps you hooked till the end.” – Film Critic A
2. “While it may not be perfect, ‘The Accountant 2’ offers a fresh take on the action-thriller genre, making it a worthwhile watch for fans of the original.” – Film Critic B
3. “Ben Affleck shines once again in his role as Christian Wolff. His performance adds depth and complexity to the storyline that is both captivating and thought-provoking.” – Film Critic C
Despite sequels often failing to top their predecessors, Gavin O’Connor’s long-awaited The Accountant 2 is an enjoyable exception… This continuation manages to stand independently while exploring the complex relationships hinted at only partially in the initial installment. Affleck and Bernthal strike a winning comedic rhythm as estranged brothers, a dynamic that was underutilized in the original, where they barely interacted until a climactic, dramatic finale.
In contrast to the first film, “The Accountant 2” shifts focus from portraying the life of a high-functioning autistic man in a somewhat awkward manner, to delving into the bond between Christian and his brother Brax, two beloved characters. Essentially, this movie is a funny sibling adventure disguised as an intricate, edge-of-your-seat thriller. The return of Ben Barnthal and Affleck as the estranged siblings who, despite their tumultuous past, found themselves in related professions, brings out the comedic aspects of the film without sacrificing its emotional depth. Their on-screen chemistry significantly enhances “The Accountant 2”, making us overlook the far-fetched details of its overly complicated central plot.
In my opinion, this franchise had no choice but to improve, and I’m happy to report that it did just that. The Accountant 2 turned out to be an enjoyable mix of chaos and violence… It was unlikely they would produce an ‘Accountant’ film without Braxton, Christian’s reckless brother character. Although not diagnosed as autistic, Jon Bernthal portrays Braxton with a hint of arrogance, his hair standing tall like Affleck’s mischievous twin. He plays the role in a way that suggests he might be on the spectrum. The duo forms an intriguing dark-humor pair: the Sociopath and the Analyst.
Movie Review: “In their reunion after almost a decade, O’Connor and Affleck seamlessly continued their work. The film premiered at SXSW, and I found it to be a funnier, more skillfully directed sequel with plenty of entertainment value. It manages to be surprisingly heartfelt, even surpassing its original in every aspect.
In simpler terms, “The Guardian” writes that Affleck’s Chris is a slightly awkward version of a cool movie assassin, while Bernthal, who played Braxton with a mysterious charm in the initial film, goes overboard in this sequel, delivering intense performances as a hitman who exudes supreme confidence and deep vulnerability. He can’t seem to stay calm. The pair’s interactions, which could easily become confusing due to the complex crime plot and heavy gunfire, are still engaging to watch.
IndieWire: “One commendable aspect of ‘The Accountant 2’ is its recognition that an autistic Ben Affleck alone cannot sustain an action movie. While Christian Wolff may be one of Affleck’s stronger performances in recent times, he functions better as a supporting character rather than the main lead. Jon Bernthal brings charisma to balance the equation, making Affleck’s accountant appear more compassionate and capable in contrast. With both actors sharing screen time equally, the film’s humorous exchanges feel more like friendly banter between brothers instead of mocking a disabled character.
The sequel to “The Accountant”, featuring Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Morgan, Daniella Pineda, Allison Robertson, and J.K. Simmons, will be released in theaters on April 25th.
