On March 9th, 2010, Square Enix launched Final Fantasy XIII for Western gamers, and its excitement is something we still remember vividly. Stunningly beautiful, it showcased the potential of the notoriously challenging PS3 platform; it introduced us to Lightning, one of the most memorable protagonists the series has seen since Cloud; the launch sparked a divide within the already contentious Final Fantasy community like never before, with some praising it as groundbreaking and others criticizing it as a significant step backwards.
Looking back now, it becomes clearer to understand Square’s intentions behind creating Lightning and companions’ sci-fantasy escapade – an adventure that was uniquely their own. The Paradigm System, which powered the game’s visually stunning combat system, represented a step back towards traditional methods following the departure taken in Final Fantasy XII. And let me tell you, it worked quite well! The soundtrack also stood out as exceptional. A remake of this game would definitely be something we’d welcome, given its potential.
Despite its efforts, Final Fantasy XIII’s fragmented storyline, linear progression that limits exploration, and omission of key components such as an open world, towns, or numerous NPCs for interaction remain challenging aspects to overlook. The game’s most ardent supporters have long contended that “things improve after the first 20 hours,” once the main cast unites and the game environment expands. However, the controversial portrayal of Vanille and Fang’s supposed Australian accents in the English adaptation, which many found offensive, is an offense that may never be forgiven.
