Elon Musk has an Xplanation.
Following a widespread downtime affecting over a million users on March 10 (previously known as Twitter), the company’s executive chairperson offered his thoughts.
In his response on March 10, the 53-year-old confirmed that X had (continues to have) a significant cyber attack. He explained that while daily attacks occur, this one was particularly resourceful, suggesting it might be the work of a skilled group or even a nation. The individual went on to imply that identifying the perpetrators would be challenging due to the nature of the attack.
No further details have been given on the alleged cyberattack at this time.
Users of the platform first reported outages in the early morning hours, after being restored more complaints began to spike just hours later and continued through the afternoon. For some, their feeds would not refresh, while others could not share posts or were met with a message from Cloudflare, a cybersecurity service provider, that read, “Web server is returning an unknown error.”
In 2022, Elon took ownership of the social media platform, which later changed its name to X. Although he holds a significant portion of shares in the network, SpaceX’s founder declared that Linda Yaccarino assumed the CEO role within the company in 2023.
The power failure follows Elon encountering another obstacle. Last week, SpaceX initiated a test flight for its Starship gigarocket, which unfortunately exploded mid-flight as reported by NBC News. The mission did not succeed, as minutes after launch multiple engines failed to function properly during the ascent into space, causing loss of contact with the vehicle.
Before wrapping up the ascent phase, an intense incident in the rear section of Starship caused the failure of several Raptor engines, according to my own observations and SpaceX’s statement on March 6. Consequently, we lost control over the spacecraft’s orientation, leading eventually to the loss of communication with the Starship.
SpaceX also assured the public that they were safe from the debris of the falling rocket.
During the live broadcast, SpaceX communications manager Dan Hout explained that they have several safety precautions established, such as designated debris response zones where they collaborate closely with air traffic control. Before launching a rocket, we have multiple safety measures already in place to ensure public safety. These measures proved effective during the last launch and are being actively implemented now.
