PS5 Pro’s Graphics Will Get Even Better in 2026

Mark Cerny, lead architect of PS5, has revealed that an upgrade to the PS5 Pro’s PSSR feature is scheduled for next year. This update is expected to enable the system to deliver outcomes akin to AMD’s FSR 4 upscaling technology. This improvement is a direct consequence of Sony’s ongoing collaboration with AMD, which is also investigating potential advancements for the PS6 within Project Amethyst.

In simpler terms, Digital Foundry revealed that the PS5 Pro’s future technology update will be centered around the existing PlayStation State Restoration (PSSR) feature, with external developers being tasked to incorporate it. Starting from next year, there are plans to make a version of the FSR 4 upscaler available on the PS5 Pro for games released in 2026. This new upscaler is seen as the next step in the evolution of PSSR and will work similarly by taking the same inputs and producing similar outputs. Mark Cerny, the architect behind the PS5, clarified that implementing this ambitious and time-consuming task is the reason for the delay, and it won’t be available on the PS5 Pro until 2026.

The initial outcome of Sony’s partnership with AMD is the advanced PSSR upscaler, which has been praised as “outstanding” by Mark Cerny. He went on to say, “It’s a more sophisticated technique that surpasses the clarity of PSSR. I am incredibly proud of the efforts put forth by our combined team!

Cerny asserts that the PS5 Pro’s architecture has the capability to handle FSR 4-like technology, even though it requires substantial computing power. In other words, they aim to make it work, and they are confident they can do so. The PS5 Pro boasts a peak performance of 300 Tera Operations Per Second (TOPS) without sparsity, a figure that stands favorably against the latest AMD GPUs on the market. They also think that sparsity isn’t beneficial for this specific upscaling algorithm.
