Death Stranding 2: On the Beach – Hideo Kojima Reveals Details on Decision to Cast Luca Marinelli

This week’s unveiled trailer for “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” introduced us to a new character named Neil, portrayed by Luca Marinelli. Hideo Kojima, the game’s director, has recently shared insights about Marinelli, his role, and their collaboration on the sequel via social media platform X.

Kojima shared that he became acquainted with Marinelli due to his portrayal of Fabio Cannizzaro/Zingaro in the Italian film “They Call Me Jeeg.” He also commended Marinelli’s work in the biographical movie “Martin Eden.” Their interaction, facilitated by Kojima promoting the film’s Japanese release in 2020, eventually led to their conversation. During this conversation, Marinelli disclosed that he was a fan of the “Metal Gear” video game series while growing up.

“During the pandemic, Kojima was auditioning for Death Stranding 2. Neil is set to take on a crucial role that will fill the void left by Cliff from Death Stranding 1. Fans wouldn’t be content unless the casting exceeded that of Mads.”

In the end, Marinelli’s work in Netflix’s “The Old Guard” was instrumental in Kojima choosing him as a suitable fit for the character Neil in “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach”. Despite not being able to meet in person due to Marinelli’s involvement in “The Eight Mountains”, they eventually connected through an online call.

Following that, I had a Zoom conversation with Luca once he returned home, proposed the idea of DS2, and he accepted to take on the role. Kojima stated this. When I mentioned I needed someone to portray Lucy, he recommended his wife, Alissa, who is an actress as well as a filmmaker. We conducted their scan and performance capture during the peak of the pandemic, but their on-set performance was impressive.

It’s evident that the digitized snippets from the trailer show their agreement to act before we had a script; I owe them thanks.”)

It’s fascinating to see how Marinelli’s portrayal of Neil aligns quite closely with Mads Mikkelsen’s character, Cliff, from the original Death Stranding. They both seem to follow similar storylines, their past regrets driving them into antagonistic roles in their respective games. What caught my attention was a subtle nod to Metal Gear Solid’s protagonist, Solid Snake, through Neil’s bandana – a clever Easter Ego, if you ask me!

The trailer for “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” unveiled several elements of gameplay. Although the fundamental gameplay structure will resemble the initial game, where players navigate as Sam Porter Bridges and deliver items by traversing expansive wilderness landscapes on foot, it appears that the second installment includes more intense action sequences.

In the midst of thrilling fight sequences, there were monumental showdowns with boss characters, as well as high-speed vehicle battles that took place on custom-built roads while motorbikes sped along.

Additionally, the trailer unveiled that “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” is set for release on PlayStation 5 on June 26th. For comprehensive information about pre-ordering and the different editions available, please explore our coverage of the event further.
