Emma Heming Willis is highlighting the importance of caregivers.
After it was reported that Gene Hackman passed away just a week following his wife and caregiver Betsy Arakawa who died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, Bruce Willis’ spouse spoke about the challenges of being a caregiver.
In a March 10 Instagram post, Emma expressed her thoughts on the tragic events involving Gene and Betsy, stating, “While this isn’t usually the topic I address, there’s definitely a lesson to be gleaned here.” She continued, “Reflecting upon it has led me to consider a wider narrative – one that underscores the importance of caregivers receiving care themselves. They are essential.
She emphasized the significance of being present for them, as it enables them to keep supporting their loved ones. However, she noted a widespread misunderstanding that caregivers have everything under control and are self-sufficient. That notion, she added, is not one she agrees with.
Instead, the 46-year-old, whose spouse of 15 years has been struggling with frontotemporal dementia, highlighted the importance of providing support to caregivers themselves, allowing them to keep on being there for their loved one.
Emma’s comments come as new information has emerged about Gene and Betsy’s deaths.
Approximately a week following the couple’s discovery in their New Mexico residence, Santa Fe’s Chief Medical Examiner Heather Jarrell revealed during a press conference on March 7 that Clint Eastwood, famously known for his role in “Unforgiven”, was experiencing severe stages of Alzheimer’s disease at the time.
In reality, the officials mentioned that it’s possible Gene, who passed away due to complications from hypertension and atherosclerosis, might have been unaware of Betsy’s passing.
After their passing, friend Tim Allin confided in The New York Times that if not for Betsy by his side, Gene, aged 95, would have passed away much earlier. He further remarked that Betsy took great care to protect Gene.
Similar to Betsy, Emma, who co-parents daughters Mabel (age 12) and Evelyn (age 10) with Bruce, has had to cope with his progressive health condition. Despite being a source of support for him, she emphasized the significance of taking time for self-reflection on her emotions.
Emma posted on Instagram in December: “I spend 30 minutes dwelling on ‘why him, why us,’ feeling my anger and sorrow. But then I let it go and get back to reality. And the reality is… unconditional love. I’m grateful for knowing it, and he’s the reason for that. I’d gladly experience everything again if given the chance.
Fortunately for Bruce, he has a wide circle of support, which includes his ex-wife Demi Moore, as well as their daughters Rumer Willis (aged 36), Scout Willis (aged 33), and Tallulah Willis (aged 30).
Actress from the show “Substance” revealed details about the strong ties within her family during her former spouse’s prolonged health struggle, mentioning that she makes weekly visits to him.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it like this: “In my perspective, our bond will forever remain unchanged, albeit in an evolving shape. To me, it has always been self-evident – I stand by the people I cherish, and that includes showing up when they need me most.
Life goes on even after a divorce, and it’s possible to raise children with love as co-parents.
Now, read on to see more of Bruce’s blended family.
Emerging cinema personalities Bruce Willis and Demi Moore crossed paths for the first time at the August 1987 premiere of the cop comedy “Stakeout”. Interestingly, neither of them starred in the film. However, Demi was present to cheer on one of the movie’s stars, her former fiancé, Emilio Estevez.
Bruce found himself single for the first time, while Demi, who had been wedded to Freddy Moore between 1981 and 1985, was now open to socializing with others.
In her 2019 memoir Inside Out, the Ghost star expressed immediately that we were fully committed, discussing our strong desire for starting a family of our own.
Approximately a couple of months into their relationship, they found themselves in Las Vegas to watch a boxing match, and unexpectedly decided to get married. They exchanged vows at the Golden Nugget hotel on November 21, 1987. A month afterwards, they held a larger ceremony, with Little Richard performing as their wedding officiant.
Demi later revealed in her book the many challenging moments their marriage faced, including Bruce expressing doubts about their union as early as 1990. Yet, to the world, they appeared as a glamorous Hollywood pair until they declared in 1998 that they were parting ways.
But they remained a family unit.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it like this: “In 2000, when I spoke with Rolling Stone, I made it clear that my affection for Demi remains unchanged. We share a unique bond as parents of three wonderful children whom we are committed to nurturing together. Our closeness today might even surpass what we had in the past. We understand that our lifelong commitment extends beyond ourselves and is centered on our kids. Our friendship endures.
Demi has said she and Bruce started trying to have a child even before their whirlwind wedding.
It’s plausible that they achieved success, as their daughter Rumer Glenn Willis was born on August 16, 1988, in Paducah, Kentucky, a location where her father was shooting the movie “In Country” at the time.
For several years after Rumer’s birth, it seemed that home videos of her delivery were the star of the show whenever her parents hosted events.
Demi stated to Vanity Fair in 1991 that Bruce was always by my side throughout the entire 15-hour labor, with only one brief exception when he went to use the restroom.
At the age of nine, Rumer witnessed her parents part ways, but she continues to be amazed by their exceptional co-parenting abilities. In an interview with People magazine in October 2024, she shared, “Our family celebrations like vacations, Christmases, and birthdays were never divided.
In a 2015 interview with Larry King, she mentioned that they consistently prioritized participating in family gatherings as a unified group, making significant efforts to maintain their bond rather than splitting into two separate entities. This, she believed, left a lasting impression.
On April 18, 2022, actress Rumer Willis joyfully announced the arrival of her daughter Louetta Isley Thomas, together with musician Derek Richard Thomas.
The actress from “My Divorce Party” shared that she combined the names of her father’s preferred musicians, Louis Armstrong, Etta James, and the Isley Brothers, to name her baby.
In simple terms, “She’s just a pure joy,” as Demi, the happy grandmother, expressed to TopMob News in January 2024, means she finds her very existence delightful. It’s as if all the worn-out phrases about happiness and fun apply. The best part is that she gets to enjoy the excitement and amusement, then rest peacefully at night.
As a lifestyle advisor, let me share my personal reflection on a situation that unfolded in August 2024. Rumer and Derek parted ways, yet I couldn’t help but admire the incredible model of co-parenting they displayed post-separation. They both took a page from the playbook of their parents – an unwavering commitment to their child’s wellbeing, even amidst personal changes. It was truly inspiring!
In October 2024, Rumer stated to People magazine, “Derek remains my best friend, and this hasn’t altered over time.” She continued, “We’ve discovered a fantastic method to maintain our friendship and our joint, nurturing parenting role. I believe we’re both incredibly content knowing we can have this for ourselves as well as for Lou.
Born on July 20, 1991, in Sun Valley, Idaho, Scout LaRue Willis was raised by parents who chose to keep their children away from the bustling scene of Hollywood during their early years.
Not that they didn’t do glitz and glam.
During her pregnancy with her second child, Demi made headlines by appearing naked on the August 1991 cover of Vanity Fair. This iconic maternity photoshoot has since served as inspiration for countless other replications.
“Pregnancy agrees with me,” she told the magazine. “I feel comfortable.”
As a child, Scout occasionally tried her hand at acting in some of her parents’ movies. However, her true passions lay in photography and music. In fact, she graduated from Brown University and released her self-titled debut album in the year 2022.
She has a fondness for movies, and prior to Demi earning a Golden Globe for “The Substance,” Scout had expressed enthusiasm over her mother’s role in the darkly humorous and grotesque film.
In an interview with Us Weekly in November 2024, Scout expressed, ‘I find her truly inspiring, and she is stunningly beautiful, incredibly gifted, and genuinely authentic.’ She continued, ‘It’s a privilege to share her presence, considering the impact she has on so many lives, her courage to be unapologetically herself is commendable.’
Tallulah Belle Willis was born Feb. 3, 1994, in Hailey, Idaho.
In 2000, when I shared with Rolling Stone my thoughts, I confessed to having encountered numerous theories, some suggesting that life was giving me a cosmic payback for past actions, due to being a father of girls. However, let me assure you, if given the chance tomorrow, I would welcome three more daughters into my life. They are nothing short of marvelous!
The Willis-Moore family moved from Idaho to Los Angeles when Tallulah was in the third grade, which gave her a slightly different, and not so wonderful, taste of Hollywood life compared to her older siblings.
The creator of the Wyllis clothing brand openly shared her journey towards sobriety at age 20, seeking treatment for depression at 25, and subsequently overcoming anorexia. In a 2023 essay published in Vogue, she revealed that the medication prescribed for her ADHD, although beneficial, also served as an appetite suppressant, further fueling her preoccupation with her weight.
Following another visit for treatment, it was revealed that Tallulah had been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. This revelation came to light after the family made their father’s aphasia diagnosis public in March 2022.
In her piece for Vogue, she expressed that while recovery might be a continuous journey, she now possesses the skills to engage fully in every aspect of her life, and particularly in her bond with her father.
On Christmas Eve, Tallulah made an announcement that she was engaged to her musician boyfriend, Justin Acee. The proposal took place at his future mother-in-law’s house in Idaho, with a family member there to record the special moment on video.
After his divorce from Demi, Bruce didn’t believe another deep love was on the horizon for him. However, fate had other plans when he encountered Emma Heming, a model from Malta, at their shared trainer’s gym in 2007.
Over the past decade, the actor from Die Hard admitted in an interview with W in 2009, he spent most of his time unattached and predominantly unhappy. He described himself as being in a somber state, and never believed that finding someone else would solve his problems. However, he often said, “I’m alone, but I’m not lonely,” though in reality, he was simply deceiving himself.
Ever since I’ve been spending everyday moments with Emma, some 23 years younger than me, my life has taken on an unprecedented level of joy and contentment.
On March 21, 2009, they got married on a beach at their home in Turks and Caicos. Alongside Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah, Demi was present with her then-spouse, Ashton Kutcher. (However, they parted ways in 2011 after six years of marriage.)
On December 29, 2024, marking our 17 years together, Emma, who’s always been open about the challenges of her spouse’s health, expressed her feelings about the “enduring love” that keeps her going.
She expressed gratitude for knowing it and attributed this to him, stating that she would gladly repeat the experience numerous times if given the chance.
Following Bruce’s diagnosis with aphasia and later dementia, Emma teamed up to establish Make Time Wellness, a supplement company that emphasizes brain health and prenatal wellness. Additionally, she introduced the Make Time Podcast.
2023 saw Emma stressing the significance of utilizing our voices to her interviewer at TopMob News. She explained that by taking action, fostering awareness, and engaging in dialogue, we can bring about change.
On April 1, 2012, Emma and Bruce became proud parents to their baby girl, Mabel Ray Willis, in Los Angeles. However, they later moved their family from L.A. to Bedford Hills, New York.
In 2017, Emma shared with Elle Decor that one of the appealing aspects of where she resides is its proximity to the city. This means she enjoys the benefits of two different environments, effectively living in a place that offers the best of both urban and rural life.
Despite geographical differences, the women of Willis-Moore managed to forge a strong connection: Scout, Tallulah, and Demi gathered together to mark Mabel’s completion of sixth grade in June 2024.
“We love her!!!” Tallulah commented on Instagram. “7th grade here we go!”
Upon the arrival of Evelyn Penn Willis on May 5, 2014, Bruce happily acknowledged that he now had five daughters.
He shared with People a week afterwards that they had been uncertain about what was to come until the baby was born. Generally speaking, he believes that women ought to take the lead in all matters. In his opinion, women tend to be far more intelligent than men.
According to Emma, she shared with Elle Decor that Bruce effortlessly adapted to whatever came his way and was always generous with his spare time, spending it with their daughters, whom he found “awesome.
She remarked, “He’s had children for such a prolonged period, and realizing his personal time is no longer his exclusively, that he’s quite liberal in sharing it.
Emma clarified that they viewed themselves as “following traditional values,” prioritizing family above all else. They believe in instilling good manners and composure in their children, while also emphasizing the value of learning and education. However, they are open-minded when it comes to allowing their children to explore various forms of self-expression, as long as it’s within reasonable bounds. They strive to prevent their kids from feeling entitled by ensuring a balanced upbringing, doing their best to find this balance.
Meanwhile, Emma has been quite open with Mabel and Evelyn regarding their father’s situation, but she is equally dedicated to making many joyful memories. She shares clips from their latest ladies’ adventure in Paris and adorns her home with festive Christmas ornaments.
