Eternals Star Is “Keeping the Faith” About Returning to the MCU After Captain America Shout Out

Actress Gemma Chan, known for her role in Eternals, remains positive about rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point down the line. In a chat with ComicBook to promote her upcoming movie The Actor, she talked about potentially playing Sersi again. Chan admitted that, as is often the case, cast members are usually the last to know when a project has been given the green light. Nevertheless, she voiced her optimism about a potential return, feeling there’s plenty of untapped material left to delve into.

Chan remarked, “Sometimes, things remain hidden from us until the very end.” He added, ” frankly, I’m hopeful. It feels like there are loose ends that need tying up, and a tale yet untold. Time will tell.

The movie titled “Eternals” made its debut in November 2021, not long after Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”. This production had Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao leading the team and boasted a big name cast consisting of Chan, Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, Kit Harington, Brian Tyree Henry, Barry Keoghan (and others). However, it received mixed reviews from critics. In fact, “Eternals” became the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film to receive a “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Globally, the movie generated $402 million in box office sales.

It was shared by Marvel last year that they don’t have any immediate plans for an Eternals 2. Although a second installment seems uncertain at the moment, storylines from Eternals were referenced in this year’s Captain America: Brave New World. This storyline revolves around the world’s uncovering of adamantium at Celestial Island. Interestingly, none of the Eternals characters appeared in Brave New World.

It’s accurate for Chan to point out there are still open ends in the story of Eternals, particularly concerning the after-credit scenes which hinted at Dane Whitman becoming Black Knight and introduced Harry Styles as Starfox/Eros. Regrettably, it seems these storylines may remain unresolved for some time due to the fact that Eternals 2 isn’t currently planned, and it’s challenging to find a suitable place in Marvel’s future schedule to revisit the Eternals narrative. This is especially tricky considering Marvel has numerous significant characters like the Fantastic Four and Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom coming up over the next few years. There was perhaps an opportunity for Black Knight within Blade, but that film has faced various production challenges and delays.

The characters from the movie “Eternals” might show up again in either “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Secret Wars”, as directors Joe and Anthony Russo hinted that any character from the vast Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) could potentially make an appearance. By incorporating Celestial Island into “Captain America: Brave New World”, Marvel seems to suggest it’s not ruling out future involvement of the Eternals and their impact on the franchise. Although a direct sequel might not be desired, it would be enjoyable if some Eternals could participate in the battle against Doctor Doom. It’s unfortunate that “Eternals” didn’t receive the best reviews, but it would be a pity if its talented cast never got another chance to portray their characters again.

The Film is summarized as follows: Set against the backdrop of a novel named Memory by Donald E. Westlake, The Film portrays André Holland’s character, Paul Cole, who finds himself in an enigmatic small town with no recollection of his past or how he arrived there. Lacking a personal identity and purpose, he embarks on a new journey, pursuing a local costume designer named Edna (Chan). As fragments of his former life gradually surface, he strives to return home; however, time proves elusive, appearances may deceive, and it becomes challenging to distinguish which of his personas is genuine.

The Actor releases in theaters on March 14th.
