Over the past six decades, Daredevil stands out among Marvel Comics’ heroes due to a captivating blend of gritty crime and thrilling action. Co-created by Stan Lee and Bill Everett in 1964, this blind character, Matt Murdock, boasts extraordinary senses that set him apart from other comic book superheroes.
Acclaimed writers like Frank Miller, Brian Michael Bendis, and Mark Waid have contributed to Daredevil’s storylines, which are characterized by intense psychological drama, city-level conflicts, and moral quandaries. The character has left an indelible mark not only in the comics but also on the big screen through a full-length movie and the critically acclaimed Netflix series. This series is now being reimagined as Daredevil: Reborn, as part of his integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Despite his grounded narrative style, Daredevil has surprisingly ventured into some incredibly peculiar and unforeseen comic book escapades. From the beginning, the character’s tales took unusual twists, and even after being solidified as a more realistic hero, various writers have placed the Man Without Fear in storylines that left fans scratching their heads. However, these illogical stories are must-reads not only for their oddness but also for the distinctive way they highlight Daredevil’s lasting charm. Here are five such stories to explore below.
Daredevil #72
Following multiple occurrences of a leopard and a person disguised as a leopard appearing throughout New York City, Daredevil decides to delve into the mystery. This enigmatic figure, known as Tagak, is actually an extradimensional being who accidentally entered our world along with his jungle counterpart in pursuit of a criminal.
In this unusual tale, Daredevil’s exploits usually steer clear of the supernatural, but this one is particularly entertaining. A unique character named Tagak grabs your attention, as he, similar to Daredevil, is blind and perceives his surroundings through his pet leopard’s eyes. This quirky storyline is a must-read for fans craving Daredevil’s peculiarities, boasting some thrilling action sequences expertly illustrated by Gene Colan.
“Fall From Grace” – Daredevil #319–325
The final application of a genetically manipulating agent known as “About Face” is sought after by multiple powerful organizations such as HYDRA, the Hand, and Snakeroot. Daredevil needs to ensure it doesn’t end up in the wrong hands, but his personal life is growing more intricate. Not only has he reignited his relationship with Karen Page, but Elektra appears to have returned from the dead, adding another layer of complexity to his existence.
This storyline is packed with action! Characters like Venom, Morbius, and Nick Fury pop up, making it one of the most bustling plots in Daredevil’s history. It’s thrilling to watch the Man Without Fear get tested as he battles a horde of supervillains. Plus, this tale marks the introduction of his iconic black armor – whether that’s good or bad!
Daredevil #74
A band of ruffians contaminated New York City’s water sources, causing mass blindness among the populace while they plundered valuables at will. Yet, these miscreants overlooked one resilient resident of the Big Apple, who is fully equipped to vanquish them without needing sight.
This oddly amusing tale brilliantly illustrates how bizarre Daredevil comics used to be before Frank Miller redefined the series with its dark, hard-boiled style. Couldn’t there possibly be simpler methods for robbing a city than causing everyone within it to lose their sight, you might wonder?
This particular issue also strays from the usual somber and brooding Daredevil persona by having him crack some humorous jokes even while engaged in combat.
“Shadowland”
In a turn of events, Daredevil assumes leadership over the ninja group, the Hand, and decides to eliminate crime in Hell’s Kitchen. Yet, as time passes, he gets entangled in the power of the mystical entity called the Beast of the Hand, leading him to act more violently and mercilessly in his crusade against crime. In an attempt to prevent Daredevil’s soul from succumbing completely, Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, along with other heroes, join forces to save the Man Without Fear.
In my opinion, “Shadowland” stands out as one of Daredevil’s grittier, more otherworldly tales. Though some fans found fault with certain character portrayals, I personally find his descent into madness and primal ferocity incredibly gripping. It’s arguably the most intense interpretation of the Man Without Fear yet, and even years later, the way it depicts him as a hero possessed by darkness still sends shivers down my spine.
Daredevil #77
Out of nowhere, a ship resembling a teardrop has materialized in New York City, calling forth Namor, the Sea-King. Daredevil and Spider-Man, suspecting Namor to be the source of the disturbance, engage him in a fierce fight. However, they soon discover that he too is clueless about the situation unfolding. As the spaceship detonates, an enigmatic woman from another world emerges, kidnapping Namor, the King of Atlantis, for unknown purposes.
From a die-hard comic book fan’s perspective, if you find the narrative perplexing right now, don’t worry – this tale is primarily focused on Namor (you’ll get more clarity in Sub-Mariner #40). It’s no secret that Marvel Comics thrives on the tension between their superheroes, often leading them into fierce conflicts that could’ve been prevented. The brawl between Daredevil, Spider-Man, and Namor is a spectacle worth every penny, culminating in an alien abducting Namor, leaving Spidey and Daredevil to continue their daily lives as if nothing happened.
