Limbo, Inside Studio Co-Founders’ Public Feud Turns Ugly, Legal

In 2006, Playdead, a renowned Danish studio known for creating exceptional indie games like Limbo and Inside, was established by Dino Patti and Arnt Jensen. However, after the launch of Inside in 2016, Patti decided to leave the studio. It seems that their relationship has soured significantly since then. Recently, tensions have escalated, leading to public disclosure, and Playdead has issued an official statement regarding the matter.

According to Game Developer’s report, Jensen has been threatening a lawsuit against Patti for over a decade due to their falling out. The situation escalated when Jensen sent Patti a legal notice on March 3rd this year, claiming that Patti had violated copyright by providing an extensive account of Limbo’s development in a LinkedIn post (which has since been removed). This post supposedly included an unauthorized image owned by Jensen, who is demanding approximately $72,630 as compensation and reimbursement for the alleged infringement.

Patti decided to speak openly about the situation because he asserted that previously, Arnt had attempted to intimidate him, to which he responded by promising to make their disagreement public. Moreover, Patti states that he played a substantial role in establishing Playdead from its early stages and emphasizes that without his contribution, the company wouldn’t have come into being. This statement isn’t driven by vanity; it is based on the undeniable truth of his involvement in the creation of Playdead.

A Game Developer contacted Playdead Studio about an issue, and the studio acknowledged that they had made requests to another party (Patti) concerning alleged misuse of Playdead’s trademarks and copyrighted materials in a commercial and promotional setting. The studio explained their actions by stating: “We felt compelled to take such steps to safeguard our trademarks and copyrights, which are crucial for the continued success and integrity of Playdead as a business.
