The Au Pair ending explained: What happens to Sandrine and Zoe?

The story opens as Zoe challenges her father, George, over her teenage pregnancy, revealing he’d hidden Sandrine from her all these years. Despite being led to believe that her child had passed away, George and Lydia had been aware that Sandrine was safe and sound.
Sandrine is still missing, and Zoe worries about her safety. She’s asking George if he has any way to contact Marie (Virginie Ledoyen) to help find Sandrine. Unfortunately, George doesn’t have the information, and Zoe is doing her best to find a clue on Sandrine’s whereabouts.
Zoe reaches out to the journalist who previously wrote an article on Sandrine, who discloses to her that he’s been delving into an undercover investigation concerning the illicit production of infants in France. Reluctant to share details, we witness Chris phoning a shadowy figure – Fred Gastou (Louis Bernard) – afterwards, to inform him that Zoe and George are unaware of the situation. Fred delegates Chris to handle Sandrine’s case, as he believes she won’t create any trouble after Chris assures him otherwise.
In the evening, Zoe finds herself deeply troubled by the suspicion that her father might have been part of numerous illicit adoption cases. Meanwhile, Chris seems to be adding fuel to this concerning situation.
After hearing a car leaving the residence, Zoe recognizes it’s George. It turns out he made an unexpected journey to France to meet Marie, but with his phone turned off, this only adds to Zoe’s concern. Chris helps soothe her worries, assuring her that Sandrine is not a cause for concern either. However, as events unfold, we learn that Sandrine is bound and in distress, calling out for help from another location.
Later on, George encounters Marie at a café, where Marie reveals to George that she is terminally ill and wishes to pass away without any regrets. George expresses his bewilderment as to why she wouldn’t have peace of mind but Marie clarifies the situation by sharing her story about Fred, the man with whom she had Zoe’s baby at one point. Marie elaborates that she and Chris were prepared to give Zoe’s baby to a caring couple, but Fred had different intentions, putting them both in danger. Marie discloses that the family Sandrine was eventually sold to were simply the highest bidders in an auction.
Initially, George felt compassionate towards Chris, but later Marie revealed that while he initially regretted his actions, he eventually changed his perspective. He discovered a way to exploit pregnant women under the age of maturity for personal gain. By deceiving them into surrendering their newborns for a fee, he and Chris would then sell the babies to the highest bidder, pocketing a portion of the profits. This scheme originated from George’s involvement with Zoe’s situation.
As I walked home, I found myself confronted by two individuals, one of whom was Fred. In a surprising turn of events, I confided in Fred that I was prepared to face death. The scene then unfolds with the other man producing a wire, followed by a chilling sound suggesting he had taken my life, all while Fred walked away calmly.
In the Cotswolds, Sandrine is attempting to escape from being bound, but Chris interrupts and teases her, inquiring about what she knows. However, it’s evident that Marie didn’t disclose any information about the other illegal adoptions to Sandrine. Instead, it was during their conversation that Sandrine herself realized her own parents had likely purchased her.
In a heartbeat, I dashed towards my car, intending to grab a potentially dangerous vial. Upon returning, a scuffle ensued, but fortunately, Sandrine managed to slip away. Minutes later, I find myself back at the same house, sensing Sandrine’s presence. I call Chris, who informs me that the police had already conducted a search of the premises the previous day, a fact they had shared with him then. As I spoke to the authorities once more, they confirmed their earlier visit.
When Zoe realizes this, she begins to connect the dots and subsequently notices a needle lying on the floor, which she retrieves.
Later, Fred contacts Chris to share that he’s learned Marie and George had a meeting, implying that Chris should provide reimbursement. Chris responds by mentioning a friend who is soon to give birth, suggesting this could serve as the compensation. Meanwhile, Amber (Margot Pue) attempts to reach her father for assistance, as Raye (Ebimie Anthony) is currently in labor.
Upon returning home, I started rummaging through Chris’s belongings, discovering the identical sewing needles that I had seen earlier. It suddenly struck me that it was Chris who had been holding Sandrine captive. Yet, the urgent matter at hand required my attention – Amber and Raye were back, with Raye in labor.
In the meantime, an ambulance is taking too long to arrive. Fortunately, just as this happens, George arrives home and steps up to assist, accompanied by Lydia, a skilled midwife. Without wasting a moment, George dashes off to retrieve his medical bag. Zoe queries him about his sudden appearance, to which he replies that there are many things she’s not aware of yet, but that Chris used to work with him in France. He promises to share more details later and hurries off to gather his belongings at home.
Does Chris get arrested?

At Chris’s temporary residence, he encounters George. George reveals to Chris that Zoe requires full disclosure of the situation, but Chris expresses regret, instead injecting him with a syringe and causing him to lose consciousness.
In my humble opinion, as I pen down this critique, Raye has welcomed a newborn son into the world, a beacon of hope and joy. Initially, she confided in Chris about her desire to place the baby up for adoption. However, upon reflection, she’s experienced a change of heart and decided to keep this precious little one close.
As a movie enthusiast, I step out of the room, on a quest to find George who was planning to detach the cable connection. Instead, I overhear Chris finalizing the details about Raye’s baby adoption with Fred. Pretending to grab towels, I secretly aim to exit the house and locate George, a fact that Chris catches onto and turns back to notice.
In a direct conversation, Zoe questions Chris regarding Sandrine, but Chris defends himself by stating that Zoe doesn’t grasp the difficult choices he made for the welfare of his family, attempting to shift blame towards George for his involvement in the unlawful adoptions procedure.
next, it becomes clear that Sandrine arrived at George’s residence where she discovers him unresponsive, promptly phoning for an ambulance as she exits. In the heat of a disagreement between Chris and Zoe, Chris attempts to involve Sandrine, pointing a needle at her neck. However, Amber observes the situation and orders Chris to release her. The authorities soon arrive, capturing Chris moments later, all thanks to Sandrine’s timely warning that George is located in the guest house.
Is George alive?

Six months later, Zoe is surrounded by her family and Raye’s as they celebrate her birthday.
However, there comes a knock on the door, revealing that it’s George, who surprisingly is still alive, desiring to have a conversation with her.
As a film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: “I was informed by the police that Marie had meticulously documented every single infant. I’m deeply sorry for my ignorance about others involved, and I’m ready to bear the repercussions of my actions.
Sandrine enters the hallway alongside the duo, causing George to be taken aback by her arrival. His emotions run high at the sight of her. They extend an invitation for her to remain, giving the impression that all is well within the family circle, with Chris conspicuously absent.
