Speaking with showrunner Russell T Davies, I’ll never forget the thrill when the role of the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who was initially proposed to me – a moment that forever changed my career and fandom!
On David Tennant‘s podcast, David Tennant’s Podcast, Davies and Tennant were chatting, reminiscing about an instance that transpired while Tennant was acting in Davies’ BBC show titled Casanova.
In a different rendition, Tennant stated: “The night before the final shoot in Manchester, I believe, was when we met. You had been in Manchester, and it was at your home that Julie Gardner and you graciously invited me over.
I chuckled when Davies hinted at having me cornered, for it turned out he had shown Tennant a VHS tape containing preliminary edits of the first and sixth episodes from season one – specifically, Rose and Dalek.
Tennant noted, “One was more completed than the other, but I assumed it was merely a visit since we’d discussed it before. I thought I was dropping by for a peek. However, you surprised me by showing these two episodes, which was delightful. Then, unexpectedly, you and Julie proposed this intriguing idea.
Davies responded, “Julie was the one who said it.” He then expressed, “I wish I could claim that line for myself. She started by asking, ‘Might you be intrigued…?’
Davis orchestrated every aspect of tonight to gauge Tennant’s interest and observe his reaction towards the revamp of the show for a contemporary age.
Later, he disclosed Tennant’s reply by stating: “After a moment of silence, you exclaimed, ‘I need a coat all the way down to my ankle.’ You gestured towards your ankle. And I thought, ‘We’ve got him!’
During their chat, Davies mentioned that he rejoined Doctor Who for a fresh phase with the aim to safeguard the series. Furthermore, he hinted at discussions about the show’s future after his term ends and potential candidates to serve as the next showrunner.
