Mad Cave’s Dark Pyramid #1 Offers a Spine-Chilling Start to a Mystery Worth Following (Review)

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but express my excitement for the chilling new mini-series titled “Dark Pyramid.” This spine-tingling production is the latest masterpiece from the creative alliance between Mad Cave Studios and the gifted writer, Paul Tobin, who previously captivated us with the mesmerizing “String.”

Set against the frozen backdrop of Alaska, this gripping five-part series unfolds when live-streamer extraordinaire, Hooky Hidalgo, stumbles upon ancient ruins while attempting to scale Mt. Denali. As is customary in a horror thriller, Hooky mysteriously vanishes after broadcasting eerie footage of the enigmatic structures nestled high within the mountain peaks.

The story takes an intriguing turn as we delve into the daring rescue mission initiated by Hooky’s influencer girlfriend, Becca. Although the synopsis of “Dark Pyramid” may hint at a familiar trope for horror enthusiasts, the early issues reveal that Tobin has a knack for crafting a unique and chilling tale.

Initially, the comic book Dark Pyramid employs live-streaming not as a mere novelty, but as an integral part of its narrative. For a substantial portion of the initial issue, the character Becca broadcasts her life to thousands of internet users, transforming her personal crisis into a shared exploration of the unknown. Financially dependent on her supporters for her expedition, she must maintain an engaging performance. Yet, she remains apprehensive about the potential perils, particularly given that even a few days lost in the harsh mountains could be fatal for Hooky. Becca’s dual role – as a worried companion and a performer who invites viewers to follow the viral tale – gives Dark Pyramid a powerful impact, as it skillfully portrays the emotional heart of the miniseries. Simultaneously, the issue subtly criticizes the constant online presence that can hinder individuals from connecting with their genuine feelings.

The brief first issue of Dark Pyramid, despite being only 22 pages long, skillfully lays a strong foundation for its intriguing plot. It hints at a larger conspiracy connected to the enigmatic ruins, suggesting that protagonist Becca will encounter both human and supernatural perils. Similar to any well-crafted mystery story, Dark Pyramid #1 does not immediately reveal its solutions but instead sets the stage for how all the pieces will neatly fall into place when the tale is concluded. This is partially due to the miniseries format, as it allows writers to plan the story from start to finish. However, Tobin effectively uses this structure to create an issue that serves as both an introduction to a larger narrative and provides chilling thrills on its own.

The highlight of Dark Pyramid #1 is unquestionably its final pages. As teased by the marvellous alternative covers for the issue, Becca eventually crosses paths with a horror she can’t fully comprehend (and neither will you). The unknown is the ultimate source of human fear, so facing a creature with no apparent logic is absolutely destabilizing. Still, this foe is recognizable enough to feel real, both to Becca and the reader, contributing to the sense of dread Dark Pyramid #1 evokes. Sara Colella’s colors also play a huge part in shifting the narrative’s tone, leaning heavily in phantasmagorical blues and venomous greens to increase the feeling of danger as pages pass and we reach the promising ending of the first issue.

To start off this larger tale, it’s uncertain whether ‘Dark Pyramid’ will conclude successfully. Yet, the initial installment establishes a lofty standard for the miniseries, providing an intriguing mystery that undoubtedly captivates fans of the macabre and eerie, making it a compelling narrative to continue following.
