Death Stranding 2: On the Beach Director Reveals Theme of Connection Came From a Feeling of Loneliness

At SXSW 2025, I was thrilled to be part of an exclusive panel dedicated to Death Stranding, where we got a sneak peek at new developments and insights. Hideo Kojima, the mastermind behind it all, shared fascinating stories about the creation of the original Death Stranding and its sequel. One intriguing topic he discussed was the origin of the game’s central theme – “connection.

As Kojima explains, the theme for his work emerged following his departure from Konami prior to the launch of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. During this period, he felt isolated and thought he had lost everything, as he put it.

In simpler terms, Kojima stated that the game “Death Stranding” revolves around creating connections. He mentioned that he felt as if he had lost everything when he found himself isolated nine years prior.

“I had something very important, which was [a] connection with people,” he concluded.

At SXSW 2025, a special panel unveiled a fresh trailer for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. This intriguing sneak peek, lasting about ten minutes, offered tantalizing insights into the possible narrative direction. Furthermore, it was revealed that the gameplay mechanics of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach would bear a strong resemblance to the original Death Stranding, as players will once again assume the role of protagonist Sam Porter, traversing expansive tracts of desolate terrain while making crucial deliveries.

In the trailer, it was unveiled that the beloved character Higgs would make a comeback in the upcoming sequel. This role is handled by Troy Baker, and he was among the most adored characters from the initial Death Stranding game. Kojima hinted that the Higgs character in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will be even more outrageous than his portrayal in the original game. In anticipation of potential player frustration at this level of absurdity, Kojima extended an apology for any players who might feel inclined to toss their controllers.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but exclaim that Higgs isn’t merely twice or thrice superior – it’s an astounding 100 times better than Death Stranding 1, in my humble opinion. By the game’s conclusion, you’ll find yourself utterly bewildered, possibly even tossing your controller aside in disbelief at its sheer absurdity. I do offer my apologies in advance for the unexpected intensity it delivers!

In “Death Stranding 2: At the Shore,” a new character named Neil will be introduced. Kojima has likened this character to Mads Mikkelsen’s role, Cliff, from the original “Death Stranding.” Kojima shared an extensive post detailing his discovery of actor Luca Marinelli and their collaboration for the creation of Neil in “Death Stranding 2.”

During the pandemic, Kojima mentioned he was auditioning for the sequel of “Death Stranding,” with Neil potentially taking over the role previously played by Cliff in the first game. However, the fans wouldn’t be content unless the new casting choice outshone Mads Mikkelsen.

The sequel to “Death Stranding,” titled “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach,” is set to arrive on PlayStation 5 on June 26th. Kojima Productions and Sony have disclosed information about different versions, such as a Digital Deluxe and a Collector’s Edition. These special editions will give players an advantage of enjoying the game for 48 hours before its official release, starting from just before it hits the shelves.

Later this year, the Death Stranding Strands of Harmony concert tour is set to commence. The journey begins on November 8 in Sydney, Australia, and continues across various global locations until it concludes in Canada in March 2026.
