The preview for Disney’s updated version of Lilo & Stitch was released on Wednesday morning, yet it wouldn’t be accurate to label this version as “live-action.” Real actors and actresses portray the human characters, whereas aliens like Stitch are computer-generated images (CGI), along with the major action sequences and space backdrops. It seems that a significant amount of animation was used in the making of this film, and it’s hoped that it will entice new admirers. Lilo & Stitch is set to premiere in theaters on Memorial Day weekend – May 23rd, 2025 – so the trailer has arrived right on time. While viewers seem a bit tired of these “live-action” remakes, there didn’t appear to be any significant criticisms about this initial sneak peek.
For quite some time, there have been plans for a remake of “Lilo & Stitch” by Disney. However, fans have been taken aback by the relatively low-key marketing strategy for this film so far. Many had anticipated a trailer during the Super Bowl, but Disney’s presence at that event appears to have been toned down. Now, the trailer has arrived unexpectedly, yet it hasn’t failed to generate interest.
In the new adaptation, Chris Sanders once again voices Stitch, a character he both conceived and wrote for the 2002 movie, sharing these roles with Dean DeBlois. Maia Kealoha portrays Lilo’s friend Stitch, while Sydney Agudong takes on the role of her older sister Nani. Interestingly, Tia Carrere, who originally voiced Nani, is now present in live-action, playing a social worker monitoring Nani’s care of Lilo. However, it’s Cobra Bubbles, the stern social worker, who makes another appearance, with Courtney B. Vance stepping into the role this time around.
In this new trailer, it’s clear that the most noticeable updates are the characters Dr. Jumba Jookiba and Agent Pleakley, who I find utterly fascinating! Interestingly, Zach Galifianakis takes on the role of Dr. Jookiba, while Agent Pleakley is played by Billy Magnussen. It appears their disguises will be more convincing this time around as they walk among us humans, thanks to some advanced technology that allows them to adopt human forms more effectively than before. As a result, we might witness fewer of their distinctive character designs than we did previously.
Over the past decade, Disney’s live-action and CGI remakes of its classic animated films have become some of the studio’s most significant ventures, and it seems this trend will continue for a while longer. This spring itself, we can expect to see the live-action versions of “Snow White” on March 21st and “Lilo & Stitch” soon after. A live-action version of “Moana” is scheduled for July 2026. Beyond that, upcoming releases include “Hercules,” “Robin Hood,” “The Aristocats,” “Bambi,” and “Tangled,” though release dates for these films have yet to be announced.
Mostly, these films have garnered commercial success without receiving significant critical praise. It’s important to note that there can be considerable differences – for instance, Mulan was released directly on streaming platforms, whereas Cruella and The Little Mermaid barely recouped double their production costs. While some critics may favor one over the others, a common consensus seems to be that this new medium isn’t significantly enhancing these tales.
Lilo & Stitch seems ready to offer something fresh, but regardless of what it is, it’s undoubtedly an excellent reason for a fun holiday outing. It’s set to premiere in theaters on May 23rd, 2025. The original animated film is currently available to stream on Disney+.
