In simpler terms, Dan Houser, a key figure at Rockstar Games who wrote for all past Grand Theft Auto games, believes that continuous storytelling in live-service games can sometimes feel repetitive or tedious.
It’s important to mention at the outset that Dan Houser is no longer employed by Rockstar, and he hasn’t contributed to the creation of GTA 6. However, given his extensive resume in writing games like GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 – both of which had online modes – it goes without saying that he has a deep understanding of this particular field.
Today, Householder delivered a speech at the London Book Fair (March 12th), promoting his inaugural novel titled “A Better Paradise Volume One: An Aftermath.” This work was inspired by a successful audio fiction series bearing the same title.
During a chat with Elle Osili-Wood, the host of BBC Radio 4’s “Sound of Gaming,” Houser discussed the intriguing subject of ‘Transitioning Storytelling and World Creation from Video Games to Audiobooks and Novels.’
In a discussion segment towards the end, Houser was posed the question, “What are your thoughts on how narrative storytelling in video games is evolving with the advent of live-service games which offer prolonged gameplay and regular updates featuring new seasons?
Houseer responded: “Achieving that level of quality is almost like finding the Holy Grail for games, don’t you agree? Some games excel more than the ones I’ve worked on, in providing a continuous narrative within the live service experience. I believe they could potentially create extraordinary series based on all those games.
I have acquaintances who are involved with it, and it’s quite demanding. They craft compelling, engaging narratives, reminiscent of a daytime soap opera. Initially, they create captivating storylines similar to those on EastEnders, but over time, these stories tend to escalate and become increasingly exaggerated.
House went on to say, “I believe they may struggle a bit due to the repetitive nature of it all. It can feel like a grind. However, crafting intriguing and immersive worlds where people want to linger is tough for anyone working in serialized storytelling, regardless of the medium.
I’ve got to give props to Houser – they sure know their stuff! It’s mind-blowing to think about how long some of these big live-service games have been running, and the fact that some might not be as story-heavy doesn’t take away from their amazingness. Regardless, it’s a major accomplishment in my book!
Regarding Grand Theft Auto (GTA), the direction for the future of this series should become clearer towards the end of this year. At this point, the release date for GTA 6 remains unknown, and it’s unclear what kind of online features will be included.
