Netflix is facing criticism over allegations that they’re enhancing the image quality of the classic ’80s sitcom, “A Different World,” using AI. This spinoff from “The Cosby Show” was added to Netflix in February, which is when sharp-eyed subscribers began noticing unusual enhancements. Since “A Different World” was originally filmed in either 480p or 360p resolution, it lacks the high-definition quality that modern viewers are accustomed to. Remastering “A Different World” into 4K using AI has produced what can only be referred to as “disturbing imagery,” with stretched faces, illegible text, and mismatched backgrounds.
In a TikTok video, developer Scott Hanselman highlighted some of Netflix’s artificial intelligence advancements made on the show “A Different World”. He started his video by demonstrating an old VHS copy of the show, which was commonly watched on a CRT TV without much thought in the past. The AI enhancements were evident through details like AI upscaling on posters and text in the background that became pixelated due to the AI.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but sing the praises of this timeless series. Enhancing its visuals is certainly an option, transforming one fuzzy pixel into four or even scaling up those four pixels to 16. However, it’s crucial to remember that such enhancements need a solid foundation to work effectively. Unfortunately, in this case, there seems to be a lack of sufficient detail to accurately portray Dwayne and Whitley as they deserve.
According to Hanselman, the AI upgrade isn’t performing optimally because it can’t interpret text, not like we do. Instead of making educated assumptions about phrases or words, it merely enlarges them, which makes it look similar to hieroglyphics.
It’s worth noting that “A Different World” isn’t the pioneer when it comes to AI involvement in the creative process. For instance, the popular game “Call of Duty” has admitted to using generative AI for creating in-game items. Similarly, Elon Musk’s chatbot, Grok, employs AI technology. Even Marvel Studios has faced accusations of utilizing AI for trailer production and poster design. For example, the initial poster for “Thunderbolts” was criticized for incorrectly depicting Lewis Pullman’s character “Bob” with an inaccurate number of fingers.
Marvel addressed allegations about using AI in the poster for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. A representative from Marvel stated, “AI was not involved in crafting these posters.” Upon closer inspection, it’s evident that the new Fantastic Four poster, depicting a multitude of people waving flags, holding signs, and snapping cameras for “Marvel’s First Family,” wasn’t shot with a real crowd but rather edited together. Certain inconsistencies caught fans’ attention as potential AI indicators – faces shared among multiple individuals, arms positioned strangely, and hands appearing to have an unusual number of fingers.
