In a stunning twist for fans, the concluding episodes of “Dragon Ball Daima” unveiled a fresh interpretation of Super Saiyan 4, and it appears that original creator Akira Toriyama intended this revised version to be the definitive one within the anime. The storyline of “Dragon Ball Daima” initiated a new journey in the authentic “Dragon Ball” timeline as Goku and the Supreme Kai embarked on an expedition into the Demon Realm. This animated series presented an entirely new narrative by Akira Toriyama, and introduced significant alterations to the established lore with each revelation about the Demon Realm. However, these weren’t the only significant modifications.
In addition to other minor revelations about the Demon Realm and its connections to the multiverse in Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball Daima introduced a substantial retcon: Goku was secretly honing his skills to attain the Super Saiyan 4 form, with a new rendition of it appearing during the climactic battle against Gomah. However, as revealed by animator Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru in an interview with DBTimes, it appears that Akira Toriyama himself crafted this revised version of Super Saiyan 4 but altered it for the new anime series.
Dragon Ball’s Akira Toriyama Designed New SSJ4 Goku
When queried about his involvement in the fresh Super Saiyan 4 Goku design (noted by @Venixys on X), Nakatsuru clarified that it was indeed Akira Toriyama who created it. He finally put an end to the fan speculation, stating, “Actually, this time it was Toriyama-sensei who designed Super Saiyan 4. In Daima, he drew a version of Super Saiyan 4 that is unique to his own style.” Although Nakatsuru played a part in animating the design for the series, it was Toriyama himself who originally conceptualized this new rendition of Super Saiyan 4.
In this explanation, it’s made clear that Super Saiyan 4 has been officially confirmed as part of the Dragon Ball universe by Akira Toriyama himself for the new anime. This differentiates the representation of this form in Dragon Ball Daimaō from its appearance in Dragon Ball GT. Moreover, the deeper red tones in this updated design set the stage for the transformations Goku would undergo later in Dragon Ball Super.
What Does This Mean for Super Saiyan 4?
With Toriyama’s confirmation that he designed this updated version of the form, there’s now a possibility we might see it in upcoming instalments. One point of contention among fans was the timeline of when exactly this form would appear. Given that Dragon Ball Daima follows after the Majin Buu arc and before the Battle of Gods arc, which initiates Dragon Ball Super, it seemed as though Goku had acquired this form but chose not to employ it in any subsequent battles for unknown reasons.
If Dragon Ball ever resumes for new tales in Dragon Ball Super or embarks on a fresh Dragon Ball anime adventure, it would be thrilling to see the iconic Super Saiyan 4 form reappear, and maybe even with some updates! Just as Vegeta unlocked his Super Saiyan 3 transformation during Dragon Ball Daima, there’s a chance that he could also acquire his unique take on the Super Saiyan 4 form now that Toriyama has provided a roadmap. This potential development certainly adds an element of excitement to our future in the Dragon Ball universe!
